SEOUL, KOREA - SK E&S officially announced that it posted pre-tax profits of KRW 810.5 billion last year, up 165% from the year before. The sales of the company stood at KRW 5.7757 trillion and the operating profits reached KRW 760 billion last year, up 29% and 156% from the previous year respectively.
Behind such great business performances lies the company’s acquisition of K-Power, a company running an electric power plant in Gwangyang.
The company’s direct purchase of materials for electric power generation has helped increase the profits as well. The local energy company said that it made profits of KRW 523.6 billion by purchasing cheap LNG from Indonesia, accounting for 65% of the total pre-tax earnings. Its income from electric power generation posted KRW 168.9 billion.
The company is making investments worth KRW 6 trillion in total into electricity businesses nationwide. In last June, the company signed a contract with an Australian firm to take over its shares on a gas filed at the price of USD 310 million.

SK E&S는 1일 공시를 통해 지난해 8105억원의 세전이익을 기록, 전년대비 165% 상승했다고 밝혔다. 매출액은 5조7757억원, 영업이익은 7600억원으로 각각 29%, 156% 늘었다.
이번 실적상승은 광양발전소를 운영하고 있는 케이파워의 합병이 주효했다. 케이파워 합병은 2011년 8월에 이루어졌지만 해당 년도에는 광양발전소 실적이 5개월치만 반영돼 실적상승에 제한이 있었다.
발전원료 직도입에 따른 이익도 한몫했다. SK E&S는 세전이익 8105억원 중 LNG 구매이익이 5236억원으로 65%를 차지했다고 밝혔다. 전력생산을 통한 이익은 20%인 1689억원을 기록했다.
SK E&S는 2006년부터 20년간 LNG를 공급받는 장기계약을 2004년 인도네시아 탕구와 체결, 광양 천연가스발전소 전력생산에 원료로 사용하고 있다. 낮은 가격으로 전력을 생산하면서 전력도매시장의 가격을 낮추는 역할도 하고 있다.
SK E&S는 1GW급 광양발전소에 이어 지난 3월 상업운전을 시작한 오성발전소(0.8GW), 장문발전소(1.8GW), 여주발전소(1GW), 신재생발전 및 집단에너지사업 등 전력사업에 총 6조원의 투자를 진행 중이다. 지난해 6월에는 호주 바로사-칼디타 가스전 지분 매매계약을 체결, 3억1000만 달러를 투자하기로 약정했다.
SK E&S 관계자는 “일각에서는 호실적을 전력생산에 따른 과도한 수익으로 바라보고 있지만, 이는 해외자원개발로 저원가에 가스를 도입한 성과”라며 “오히려 낮은 발전원가로 전력도매시장의 가격은 낮추는 데 기여하고 있다”고 말했다.
