SEOUL, KOREA – It turned out that Korea’s first-quarter exports have entered the recovery phase. According to the Korea International Trade Association (KITA), Korea’s exports ticked up 0.5% year-on-year to USD 135.5 billion in the first quarter of this year while Korea’s imports slid 3% to USD 129.7 billion. Accordingly, Korea has posted a trade surplus of USD 5.88 billion.
Pushed up by a surplus of USD 3.36 billion (provisional) in March, Korea’s Q1 trade surplus has grown sharply from last year’s USD 1.18 billion.
By export item, exports of mobile phones rose 23.6%, LCDs 9.5%, petrochemicals 9.3%, semiconductors 4.9% and oil products 4.4%. Meanwhile, those of vessels lost 26.4%, steel products 11.3%, cars 3.2% and general machinery 3.0%.
With a turnaround in the information and telecommunications (IT) industry, exports of semiconductors and LCDs have started to bounce back but exports of steel slid owing to pullbacks in the unit price and global demand.
By region, exports to China have shown signs of improving amid booming exports to ASEAN, but exports to the EU, Japan and the US have diminished. In particular, the yen’s downward trend that has persisted since October of last year has put a damper on Korea’s exports to Japan.

1분기 한국 수출, 회복 국면 진입했다
올해 1분기 수출이 회복 국면에 진입한 것으로 분석됐다.
4일 한국무역협회에 따르면 1분기 수출은 작년 동기 대비 0.5% 증가한 1355억달러, 수입은 3% 감소한 1297억달러로 58억8000만달러 흑자를 기록했다.
지난달 33억6000만달러(잠정) 흑자를 기록한 데 힘입어 1분기 흑자 규모가 작년 11억8000만달러에 비해 크게 늘었다.
1분기 통관일수가 67일로 작년 같은 기간보다 1.5일 줄어 전체 수출은 소폭 증가에 그쳤지만 하루 평균 수출액이 1월 19억달러, 2월 20억7000만달러, 3월 21억1000만달러로 꾸준히 증가했다. 3월 하루 평균 수출액은 2011년 9월 이래 최고치다.
품목별로는 휴대폰(23.6%), LCD(9.5%), 석유화학(9.3%), 반도체(4.9%), 석유제품(4.4%) 등이 선전했다. 반면에 선박(-26.4%), 철강제품(-11.3%), 자동차(-3.2%)•일반기계(-3.0%) 등은 부진했다.
정보통신(IT) 경기가 살아나면서 반도체•LCD 수출이 회복되기 시작했지만 철강은 단가 하락•수요 부진, 자동차는 조업일수 감소 등의 영향으로 실적이 좋지 않았다.
지역별로는 아세안 수출 호조 속에 중국 수출도 회복 기미를 보이고 있지만, EU•일본•미국으로의 수출은 감소세를 기록했다. 특히 일본은 작년 10월부터 시작된 엔저 등의 요인이 크게 작용했다.
