Seoul, Korea - The wireless business division at Samsung Electronics is evolving from a handset assembler into a total electronics company of its own, by expanding the scope of in-house production to overall rear industries, including materials, parts and modules. It plans to complete its chain of supply optimized for the production of smartphones.

According to the trade on Monday, the wireless business division of Samsung Electronics started developing the application processor, adding one more item to the list of its in-house production items that already includes camera module, touch screen panels and cases. The wireless business division has renamed its AP development team into AP Lab to strengthen the semiconductor development capacity. If the Lab can integrate the LTE chip developed by DMC Lab to its AP, a significant level of synergy can be expected.

The wireless business division had also reached out to the core materials for an in-house production, such as camera lenses. The division recently built 30 injection, mold, assembly, and inspection lines for the production of lenses for 13 megapixel camera modules in its Vietnam factory.

The business division is also involved in the assembly of LCD backlight unit for the smartpads and mid-to-low price range smartphones. The division made a direct contract with the BLU supplier and started to procure the panels and other parts by itself.

The division had ordered 200 injection molders of 250 ton and 350 ton class to its Vietnam factory this year. The ordered molders can produce 7 million units of 5-inch smartphone cases per month. Samsung Electronics had built a camera module production line in 2011 and had been producing 13 megapixel modules in-house.
