SEOUL, KOREA – LG Electronics will become the world’s first to mass-produce 6-inch N-type solar cells. LG’s such move mirrors its attempt to break into new markets where there is high demand for highly efficient products. LG Electronics, which has thus far maintained a wait and see attitude in the solar power business, now seems determined to expand its solar business by making new investments.
LG Electronics has recently converted some of its P-type solar cell production lines in Gumi (the second largest city in Gyeongsangbuk-do) into N-type ones.
Solar cells are largely divided into P-type and N-type, which features electron movements that are more than three times faster than P-type’s. Since the production cost of N-type batteries is high and its manufacturing processes are tricky, only a handful of companies are capable of producing N-type photovoltaic cells. Besides, N-type solar cells’ share of the worldwide solar cell market is only 5%.
LG Electronics has released a prototype of a N-type battery after turning some of its 420MW solar battery production line into a 65MW N-type production line.
The LG prototype’s power conversion efficiency is up to 20.5%, the highest yet achieved.

LG전자, 고효율로 태양광 사업 차별화
LG전자가 세계 최초로 6인치 N-타입 태양전지 양산에 나선다. 일본 등 고효율 제품 선호도가 높은 신시장에서 활로를 모색하겠다는 의지다. 그동안 태양광 사업에서 “시황을 지켜보겠다”는 입장이었지만 신규투자를 단행하며 사업 확대에 대한 의지를 드러냈다.
14일 관련업계에 따르면 LG전자는 최근 경북 구미 소재 결정질 태양전지 생산라인 일부를 기존 P-타입기반에서 6인치 N-타입 기반으로 전환했다.
태양전지는 크게 P-타입과 N-타입으로 구분한다. N-타입이 P-타입보다 전자 흐름이 세배 이상 빠르기 때문에 효율이 높다. 하지만 제조원가가 높고 제조 공정이 까다로워 일부 기업만 N-타입 제품을 생산하고 있다. 일본 산요 히트셀(5인치), 미국 선파워 후면양극전지(5인치), 중국 잉리솔라 판다(6인치)가 N-타입 제품으로 이름을 알렸다. 세계 태양전지 시장에서도 N-타입 기반 제품 비중은 5%에 불과하다.
LG전자는 420㎿ 규모 태양전지 생산라인 가운데 65㎿를 생산설비를 N-타입 기반으로 전환하고 시제품을 출시했다. 태양전지 광변환 효율은 최대 20.5%로 세계 최고 수준이다. 잉리솔라가 6인치 N-타입 태양전지 효율을 19%대 후반까지 끌어올렸지만 양산은 이뤄지지 않았다. 6×60(6인치 태양전지 60장) 모듈의 출력은 최대 285와트(W)다. 같은 크기 P-타입 모듈 출력은 260~265W 선을 오간다.
LG전자가 초고효율제품으로 시장 공략에 나선 것은 기존 생산설비 활용도를 높이는 동시에 시장에서 경쟁을 최소화하기 위한 선택으로 보인다. 기존 P-타입 생산라인에 일부 공정을 추가해 중복투자를 최소화 했다. 또한 고효율 N-타입 태양전지로 공급과잉이 극심한 결정형 태양전지 시장에서 차별화된 제품으로 시장을 공략할 수 있을 것으로 보인다. 산요, 선파워 제품에 비해 가격 경쟁력을 갖춰 출시해 최근 급성장하고 있는 일본 시장 등 고효율 제품 선호가 높은 신시장에서 입지가 넓어질 것으로 예상된다. LG전자는 시장 상황에 따라 N-타입 태양전지 제조라인 비율을 단계적으로 높여나갈 계획이다.
안형근 건국대학교 교수는 “LG전자는 300W급 결정질 모듈생산을 목표로 R&D를 추진해 왔다”며 “N-타입 태양전지와 아모퍼스 박막태양전지로 결정질, 박막분야에서 세계 최고 수준의 효율을 달성해 향후 시장에서 안정적인 매출이 기대된다”고 말했다.
