Seoul, Korea - The number of subscribers to LTE in Korea is expected to surpass that of 3G in June, if early, and when it happens, the amount of data traffic on wireless network will grow exponentially. The telecoms must come up with a plan to handle the data traffic that will otherwise overload the network.
According to the industry on Monday, the number of total LTE subscribers by the three telecoms has passed 20 million mark as of this month. As the biggest portion of new subscribers to LTE services came from the 3G, the gap between two sides narrowed fast.
A telecom person commented on the 15th, “the official tally is not available yet, but considering the growth pattern, the number of LTE subscribers at three telecoms is at or above 29 million, and the difference between 3G and LTE subscribers is estimated to be less than 7%p.”
The growth of LTE subscriber is going to get faster, considering the upcoming launch of new smartphones like Galaxy S4 and the next iPhone, and the rate plans and services being restructured around the LTE service.
As the LTE established itself as the mainstream mobile telecommunication method, the demand for more bandwidth by telecoms is expected to grow as well. Ways to prepare for the increased data traffic are to assign additional frequency or adjust rate plans, but they are easier said than done.
The two regulators, Ministry of Future Creative Science and Korea Communications Commission determine the frequency related matters, making it more difficult to make a swift and rational decision. Controlling demand with the price is also difficult, because the three telecoms use rate plans as their main marketing points.
LTE•3G 점유율 상반기 `역전`...데이터 쓰나미 눈 앞
국내 롱텀에벌루션(LTE) 가입자가 이르면 6월 3세대(G) 이동통신 가입자를 추월할 전망이다.
LTE 역전현상이 벌어지면 무선통신 트래픽 발생량이 기하급수적으로 늘어날 전망이다. 주파수 광대역화 등 트래픽 과부화 대책이 발등에 불로 떨어졌다.
15일 관련업계에 따르면 국내 이동통신 3사 LTE 가입자 수 총합이 4월 현재 2000만명을 넘어섰다. 신규 LTE 가입자 대부분이 3G에서 넘어오며 양 진영 간 격차는 10%포인트 안쪽으로 좁혀졌다.
SK텔레콤, KT, LG유플러스 등에 따르면 2월 말 국내 전체 LTE 가입자는 약 1867만명 수준으로 전체 이동통신 가입자의 34.7%를 차지했다. 같은 기간 WCDMA(3G) 가입자는 2495만명으로 전체 46.4%를 점유해 LTE 가입자 보다 11.7% 포인트 많았다.
통신사 관계자는 “아직 공식 집계가 완료되지 않았지만 증감 추세를 감안하면 4월 현재 이통 3사 LTE 가입자는 2000만명 이상”이라며 “3G와 LTE 가입자 점유율 차이는 약 7%포인트 안쪽으로 추산된다”고 말했다.
LTE는 지속적으로 3G와 가입자 점유율 격차를 줄여왔다. 방송통신위원회 등에 따르면 지난해 12월 50.4%던 국내 3G 가입자 점유율은 1월 48.6%, 2월 46.4%, 3월 44%(비공식)로 하락했다.
반면에 LTE 가입자 점유율은 12월 29.5%, 1월 LTE 32.2%, 2월 34.7%, 3월 37%(비공식)로 상승했다. 12월 20%포인트였던 격차가 3달만에 7%포인트까지 좁혀진 것이다. 이 추세대로라면 5월에서 6월 사이 LTE 가입자가 3G를 넘어선다.
LTE 가입자 증가세는 지금보다 더욱 가속화 될 전망이다. 갤럭시S4, 신형 아이폰 등 파괴력을 가진 스마트폰 시리즈가 출시 대기 중인데다 최근 요금제와 서비스가 LTE 중심으로 재편됐기 때문이다.
이승혁 한국투자증권 애널리스트는 “이르면 5월 경 LTE 가입자가 3G를 따라잡는 역전현상이 나타날 것으로 보인다”며 “연말까지 전체 이동통신 가입자의 60% 정도가 LTE를 사용할 것”이라고 내다봤다.
LTE가 `제1 이동통신기술`로 자리를 잡으며 주파수 광대역화 등 업계 요구는 더욱 거세질 것으로 보인다. 동영상 스트리밍, 실시간 게임 등 고대역폭을 이용하는 서비스가 급증하면서 트래픽 증가세도 가팔라지기 때문이다.
방통위가 지난 1월 조사한 `이동전화 단말기별 트래픽 현황`에 따르면 LTE 가입자는 3G 가입자에 비해 월 평균 30%가량 데이터를 더 쓰는 것으로 나타났다. 에릭슨은 우리나라 무선 트래픽이 2017년까지 연평균 100% 이상 증가세를 기록할 것으로 예측했다.
트래픽 증가에 대응하는 방법은 추가 주파수 할당과 데이터 중심으로 요금제를 개편하는 것이지만 쌓인 문제가 만만치 않다.
주파수는 정책결정기구가 미래창조과학부, 방송통신위원회 등으로 분산되며 신속하고 합리적인 의사결정이 어려워졌다. 요금제 역시 이통3사가 무제한 등 출혈을 감수하며 경쟁 중이다.
통신업계 관계자는“현재 무선통신 인프라로 연말까지는 데이터를 받아낼 수 있을 것”이라며 “장기적인 안목으로 정책과 산업에서 IP통신 진화에 따른 준비를 해야한다.”고 지적했다.
