SEOUL, KOREA - LS Cable & System (represented by Goo Ja-eun) announced on April 15th that it had exported high-voltage direct current (HVDC) cables to Denmark and the Netherlands.
The Danish electric power authorities are going to purchase a HVDC submarine cable of 24.5km with the capacity of 285kV and connecting materials to replace worn-out cables laid between two islands in the nation. Van Oord, a Holland-based marine facility construction company, is also going to be provided with a high voltage alternating current cable of 25.7km with the capacity of 150kV and relevant connecting materials.
HVDC is an electric power transmission system that is used for a long-distance transmission of high-voltage electric power. The cable company is expecting the HVDC market would grow to the size of KRW 70 trillion by 2020.
Meanwhile, Van Oord is going to use LS’s cable to connect the complex of sea-surface wind power plants in Luchterduinen to the electric grid of Holland.
“Thanks to the purchase order we’ve won, we could enter the high value-added and cutting-edge cable market. We will introduce our strategic products including high-voltage, submarine and HVDC cables to foreign markets,” says a senior official from LS Cable & System.

LS전선(대표 구자은)은 국내 처음 초고압직류송전(HVDC) 케이블을 덴마크에 수출했다고 15일 밝혔다.
덴마크 전력청은 285kV급 HVDC 해저 케이블 24.5km와 접속 자재를 도입한다. 이 나라 동북부 올보르와 래소섬 사이의 노후 해저 케이블을 교체할 예정이다. 네덜란드 해양 시설공사 기업인 반오드는 150kV 해저 교류 초고압 케이블 25.7km와 접속재를 공급 받는다.
HVDC(High Voltage Direct Current)는 발전소에서 만든 교류 전력을 직류로 변환시켜 송전한 후 다시 교류로 변환시켜 공급하는 송전 방식이다. 대용량 전력을 장거리에 보낼 때 이용된다. 높은 전압 때문에 내구성이 강해야 한다. LS전선 측은 HVDC 시장이 오는 2020년 약 70조원 규모로 성장할 것으로 기대했다.
이와 더불어 네덜란드 해양 시설공사 기업인 반 오드는 이번 LS전선의 케이블을 북해 인근 루흐트다이느(Luchterduinen) 해상풍력발전 단지와 네덜란드 전력망을 연결하는 데 쓸 계획이다.
윤재인 LS전선 영업본부장(전무)는 “이번 수주로 고부가가치 첨단 케이블 시장에 진입했다”며 “초고압·해저·HVDC 케이블 등 전략 제품을 중심으로 해외 시장을 공략할 것”이라고 말했다.
