SEOUL, KOREA – LG Chem has overtaken Japan’s Panasonic to take the No.2 spot in the global small-sized secondary lithium-ion battery market. Accordingly, both the No.1 and No.2 positions have been seized by Korean manufacturers. Besides, their combined market share is nearing 40%. Since Korean suppliers of small lithium-ion batteries have secured sustainable supply lines such as Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and Apple, they are likely to take the lead in the market for the time being.
According to SNE Research, LG Chem accounted for 16.5% (or 205 million cells) of the 2012 shipment of about 1.24 billion cells, beating out Panasonic with 14.1% or 176 million cells. Samsung SDI has maintained the No.1 position for two straight years by rolling out 280 million cells (22.5%). Meanwhile, Sony managed to finish fourth with 86 million cells. Korean companies’ growing market shares seem to stem from a surge in sales of smartphones and smart pads.
In particular, LG Chem, which supplies polymer batteries to Apple for the new iPad and the iPad Mini, has considerably raised its battery productions, clinching 37.6% of Apple’s battery orders. In 2012, LG Chem grew 7.3%, the highest pace in the top group consisting of Samsung SDI, Panasonic, Sony, etc.

LG화학, 일본 파나소닉 제치고 '2위 등극'
LG화학이 소형 리튬이온 2차전지에서 일본 파나소닉을 제치고 세계 2위에 올라섰다. 전통강호 일본 기업이 주류였던 세계무대에 우리 기업이 1•2위를 차지하게 된 것이다. 우리 기업들의 시장 점유율도 40%에 육박한다. 삼성전자•LG전자 이외에 애플 등 탄탄한 공급선 확보로 우리기업의 선두권 독주는 당분간 계속될 전망이다.
17일 SNE리서치에 따르면 2012년 4분기 기준으로 소형 리튬이온 2차전지 출하량은 1244백만셀로 이 가운데 LG화학이 205백만셀(16.5%)을 출하해 176백만셀(14.1%)을 출하한 파나소닉을 제치고 2위로 올랐다. 삼성SDI는 280백만셀(22.5%)을 생산하며 2년째 1위를 유지했다. 반면 소니는 86백만셀을 출하해 가까스로 4위를 지켜냈다. 이처럼 국내 기업의 시장 점유율 상승은 스마트폰과 스마트패드 등 IT 모바일 제품 판매량 급증에 따른 것으로 분석된다.
특히 애플의 `뉴아이패드`와 `아이패드미니`에 폴리머 전지를 공급하는 LG화학이 애플 전체 물량의 37.6%를 차지하면서 전지 생산량이 크게 늘었다. 지난해 4분기 삼성SDI, 파나소닉, 소니 등의 상위 업체 중 LG화학만 7.3%의 성장세를 지켜낸 것으로 나타났다.
신동민 SNE리서치 연구원은 “애플에 공급되는 LG화학의 소형전지 물량이 늘어난 것이 2위 등극에 주효하게 작용했다”며 “LG화학은 2012년 4000억원 규모의 신규 투자 이후 2013년에도 폴리머 전지의 생산라인 확대를 위해 1500억원 추가 투자를 계획하고 있어 세계 2위 자리 유지는 당분가 계속될 것”이라고 전망했다.
