Seoul, Korea - SK Telecom announced on the 21st that number of its LTE service subscribers has passed 10 million mark as of 19th this month. SK Telecom was the world’s fourth mobile carrier to have passed the 10 million mark, after Verizon and AT&T of the U.S. and NTT DoKoMo of Japan.
The record was achieved in 21 months since its launch of LTE service in last July. Compared to the fact that it took 37 months for the 3G to pass the same mark, LTE is growing at the speed twice faster than its predecessor.
SK Telecom is expecting its daily data traffic from both its 3G and 4G networks will exceed 1 Peta (1,024TB) within this week, largely due to the increase in its LTE subscribers. 1 Peta is about 5 times of the total data traffic at SK Telecom in July 2011 when the LTE service started and about 100 times of the total data traffic in August 2010 when the unlimited data plan was introduced for the 3G network.
1 Peta is the size of about 214 million songs of 5MB size and 1.5 million movies of 700MB.
SK Telecom projected that its LTE subscribers will reach 15 million by the end of this year. SK Telecom plans to launch LTE-A service in coming September to provide even faster and more stable mobile telecom quality.

SK텔레콤(대표 하성민)이 지난 19일 기준 LTE 고객이 1000만명을 돌파했다고 21일 밝혔다. 미국 버라이즌과 일본 NTT도코모, 미국 AT&T에 이어 네 번째로 1000만 고객을 기록했다.
지난 2011년 7월 LTE 상용화 이후 1년 9개월 만이다. 이는 SK텔레콤 3세대 이동통신 WCDMA가 2006년 5월 상용화 이후 1000만명 돌파까지 3년 1개월이 걸린 것을 감안하면 두 배 정도 빠른 속도다.
SK텔레콤의 LTE고객 비중은 지난 2011년 전체 고객의 2.4%에서 37% 수준으로 급증했다.
SK텔레콤은 이 같은 증가가 △세계 최고의 LTE품질 조기 확보 △LTE특화 서비스•콘텐츠 △고객 취향에 맞춘 다양한 단말 출시 등 차별화 전략에서 비롯된 것으로 분석했다.
SK텔레콤은 LTE 고객 증가에 힘입어 전체 고객(3G, 4G 포함)의 일일 데이터 트래픽이 이달 중 1페타(PETA, 1024TB)를 넘어설 것으로 내다봤다.
SK텔레콤은 “1일 데이터 트래픽 1페타는 LTE를 통한 데이터 대량 소비시대로의 진입을 의미한다”고 설명했다.
1PETA는 LTE를 처음 상용화했을 때인 2011년 7월 기준 전체 트래픽의 약 5배에 달하며, 3G 무제한 데이터 요금제를 도입하기 직전인 2010년 8월 대비 약 100배가량 증가한 양이다.
5MB 노래 한곡을 2억1474만8364곡 다운로드하고, 700MB 영화 한 편을 153만3916편을 전송할 수 있는 용량이다.
SK텔레콤은 오는 연말까지 자사 LTE 고객이 1500만명으로 증가할 것으로 전망했다. SK텔레콤은 오는 9월 LTE-A 상용화 서비스로 보다 빠르고 안정화된 이동통신 품질을 제공한다는 계획이다.
장동현 SK텔레콤 마케팅부문장은 “국내 최초 1000만 가입 등 LTE 대중화 시대를 크게 앞당겼다”며 “올해 LTE가 국내 최다가입자망으로 부상할 것으로 예상되는 만큼 LTE를 중심으로 정보통신기술(ICT)산업 혁신을 주도해 나갈 것”이라고 말했다.
