Seoul, Korea - Kakao has joined hands with the government to incubate venture companies founded by young adults.

On Thursday, Small and Medium Business Administration (SMBA) held an MOU signing ceremony with Kakao for the establishment of Kakao Young Adult’s Start-Up Fund. Kakao is the largest investor to the Fund of KRW 30 billion size. This is the first time for a successful venture company to create a start-up fund together with the government to promote the start-up by young adults.

Kakao is investing KRW 10 billion into the Kakao Young Adult’s Start-Up Fund, and SMBA and others are investing KRW 18 billion and 2 billion, respectively. The fund is to be officially launched in May.
The Fund was designed by the government to create a virtuous circle in venture ecology and to support the increasing number of young adults starting their venture companies to capitalize on the opportunities presented by the next generation ICT. The Fund will focus its investment on the promising venture companies started by the CEOs 39 years or younger and the companies whose number of employees 29 years or younger is more than half of all employees.

The Korean venture companies had a very limited option to realize their gains, and it took much longer to do so, because of the s prevalent market practice of lending rather than investing, building an in-house company rather than merging or acquiring the other and high entry barrier to KOSDAQ market. Making another start-up or investing in other potential ones was almost impossible.

SMBA plans to induct other successful venture companies to participate in the Fund and grow the size of it up to KRW 100 billion by the end of this year.

Sukwoo Lee, the president of Kakao commented, “unlike the existing funds that were mere financial investors, we will actively be involved in transferring our experiences and management know-how.”
