Exhibition & Conference / i-SEDEX Innovation technology development's acceleration stepping stone for excavating new customers World semiconductor market scale has grown annually by 6.8% with a total around $227.5 billion as of 2005. In the case of memory, expectation demand happened with NAND flash demand's enlargement as well as new Windows OS, VISTA, launch. In the case of non-memory too, demand increases for digital electric home appliances as well as autos are forecast. By regions, the Asian region has maintained its continuous growth pace, whereas established markets such as Japan (19%), North America (18%), and Europe (24%) showed growth decrease. As of 2005, Korea is showing exports of $30.2 billion and imports of $25.1 billion while exporting over 90% in the case of production and importing 70% in the case of demand. In the area of semiconductor equipment, exports are continuing a growth pace due to the enlargement of facility investments in China and Taiwan as well as domestic corporations' inroads into the Chinese market with exports of $406 million in 2005. Semiconductor's relative importance increases within system Semiconductor equipment localization is progressing ceaselessly, but the core equipment's import dependency degree is still high at $5.01 billion in 2005, over 90% in terms of import relative importance from the U.S and Japan. In the light of semiconductor materials, domestic materials market scale in 2005 posted $3.84 billion, up 41.7% in comparison with the preceding year. Since semiconductor material import also gives prominence to advanced countries such as the U.S. and Japan, international collaboration system's maintenance is necessary for the supply of stable raw material: (material dependence rate- the U.S. (17%), & Japan (74%). Following Intel which maintains No.1 with around 13% share of the entire semiconductor market, Samsung (8%), TI (4%), and Toshiba (4%) follow globally. Hynix posted the ninth position in 2005. Among others, Japan and the U.S. corporations' facility investment to restrain Korean corporations will be enlarged in 2006. Toshiba will invest $2.8 billion, up 41% compared with 2005, and in the case of Micron too, the company will invest $2.3 billion, up 77% compared with 2005. Despite unfavorable market conditions of high oil prices and exchange rate decline, Samsung Electronics and Hynix at home have maintained a solid growth pace with $18.34 billion, a 13% increase and $5.72 billion, a 23% increase respectively. As regarding domestic market's industry scale, production takes a favorable turn thanks to DRAM market favorableness as well as NAND Flash's manufacturing enlargement. In terms of domestic demand, its increase rate was dulled somewhat due to economic conditions such as exchange rate decline and high oil price. As of 2005, semiconductor companies amount to around 400, the majority of which are located in Seoul and Kyeonggi province. In the light of technology development, semiconductor's relative importance within the system is on the rise thanks to diverse system demand increase in fields such as IT and automotive manufacturing in the global market. High effectiveness, low expenses, and low electricity are evolving as a standard of competitiveness and a human beingfriendly semiconductor is emerging. As regards technology development trends, innovation technology development's acceleration is being attained with next-generation memory, convergence semiconductors, and cuttingedge equipment and material. With domestic corporations, Samsung Electronics began to mass produce 80nm 1G DDR2 DRAM from March of this year. The company is scheduled to complete mass production preparations by the end of 2007 by developing a 45nm logic process by teaming up with four companies including IBM and Infineon. Hynix Semiconductor invested $250 million in the U.S. and 1.2 trillion won ($1.2633 billion) for the purpose of domestic memory extension of installations at home respectively. Dongbu Electronics has developed design circuit correction technology which can apply to 90nm semiconductor manufacturing processes by teaming up with Mentor Graphics Corporation, a worldwide semiconductor design software company in the U.S. Smaller companies' capital and manpower solution Korea's largest scale international exhibition in the area of semiconductor and display, the 8th International Semiconductor and Display Exhibition 2006 (i-SEDEX) is just around the corner. Semiconductor experts point out that "To construct a development foundation of equipment/material industry is urgent," saying that due to paltry scale, the absence of core technology, and insufficient confidence, domestic equipment and material industry's foundation construction must be prepared. In addition, domestic semiconductor equipment and material manufacturers are enlarging their overseas inroads. For the greater part of smaller companies, their profit creation is difficult due to capital and manpower difficulties, and low price market's rapid growth. Measures to solve smaller companies' capital as well as manpower supply's difficulty must be prepared, experts point out. i-SEDEX is new name of SEDEX Korea that has expanded in line with the demands of internationalization for its grand opening. Hosted by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Energy as well as the Ministry of Science and Technology, Republic of Korea, i-SEDEX does not only provide a stepping stone for excavating new customers by maximizing the marketing effects of the participating companies, but also enhances its value with various side events, becoming as a place of festivity where business, academics and government can get together. i-SEDEX 2006 won't just have a name change Regarding the major focus of i-SEDEX 2006, the Secretariat first off underlines: "i-SEDEX 2006 won't just remain as an exhibition with a name change." To achieve the internationalization of SEDEX Korea, preliminary preparation has actually already started since 2005 and extensive investments have been accomplished for i-SEDEX 2006, according to officials involved in it. These officials said that co-hosting with Kotra has been confirmed and Kotra's 120 overseas branches will join i-SEDEX. The exhibition scale moreover has been expanded and the booth installation period has been extended in line with the increasing number of participating companies. Items to be participated include device, equipment manufacturers, factory facility, material, components & parts, embedded system, and software.
