Seoul, Korea - Qualcomm held a media day event in Beijing and announced its plan to mass-produce Snapdragon 800 from late May. The company didn’t reveal which smartphone the mass produced chip will be used for, but the trade is betting one of the next-generation smartphones from LG, Motorola or Pantech will be the next fastest phone with the new processor
At the moment, the place of fastest phone is taken by Galaxy S4, HTC One, Optimus G Pro and Xiaomi 2S, all of which are powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 600. Snapdragon 800 has approximately 40% faster performance than its predecessor, with communication modem, wi-fi, GPS, Bluetooth and GPU all in one chip. Made in 28 nano production line of TSMC, Snapdragon 800 has the maximum speed of 2.3㎓ and supports playback and video recording in UHD and 4K resolution graphics.
The smartphones with Snapdragon 800 are expected to appear in the market from the third quarter. The first smartphone with the latest CPU is likely to be Grand Memo by ZTE. ZTE showcased Grand Memo in the MWC 2013 in Barcelona.
The Phone Arena recently reported that Google X Phone had been benchmarked by Antutu, and included in its specification are likely to be Android 5.0.1 with Snapdragon 800. Optimus G2 by LG is also anticipated to adopt the new CPU.

하반기 속도 기어를 한 단계 올린 스마트폰이 연이어 나온다. LG전자 차기 기대작 `옵티머스 G2`와 구글과 모토로라의 첫 합작품 `X폰`이 그 주인공으로 점쳐진다. 퀄컴이 출시할 모바일 애플리케이션프로세서 `스냅드래곤800` 덕분이다. 삼성전자 `갤럭시S4`의 독주에 제동을 걸지 주목된다.
엔가젯은 5월 말 퀄컴이 스냅드래곤800 양산에 들어간다고 29일 전했다.
퀄컴은 베이징에서 미디어 행사를 열고 5월 말부터 스냅드래곤800 대량생산을 시작한다고 밝혔다. 어떤 스마트폰에 이 칩이 들어가는지는 언급하지 않았지만 LG전자와 모토로라, 팬택 등이 내놓을 차세대 스마트폰이 유력하다.
현재 가장 빠른 스마트폰 자리에 오른 갤럭시S4를 비롯해 HTC원, 옵티머스G 프로, 샤오미 2S 등은 퀄컴 스냅드래곤600을 쓴다. 스냅드래곤800은 이보다 40% 빠른 성능을 자랑한다. 칩 하나에 통신모뎀부터 와이파이, GPS, 블루투스, GPU가 모두 들어간다. 스냅드래곤800은 TSMC의 28나노 생산 라인에서 만들어진다. 스냅드래곤600과 다르게 HPM(High Performance for Mobile) 공정을 사용해 최대 2.3㎓ 속도를 지원한다. 이 칩은 UHD와 4K 해상도 디스플레이 재상과 동영상 녹화가 가능하다.
스냅드래곤800을 쓴 스마트폰은 3분기 나올 전망이다. 가장 먼저 스냅드래곤을 쓸 제품은 중국 ZTE `그랜드 메모`일 가능성이 높다. ZTE는 지난 2월 스페인 바르셀로나에서 열린 MWC 2013에서 그랜드 메모를 공개했다.
최근 폰아레나는 구글 X폰의 `안투투` 벤치 마크 결과가 등장했다고 보도했다. 여기 올라온 X폰은 안드로이드 5.0.1 키라임파이에 스냅드래곤800일 확률이 높은 것으로 추측했다. 하반기 기대작으로 꼽히는 LG전자 `옵티머스 G2`도 이 칩을 쓸 것으로 보인다. LG전자는 지난해 옵티머스G 출시때 가장 먼저 퀄컴 최신 AP를 사용했다.
