Seoul, Korea - Samsung SDI won the bid for Europe’s largest energy storage system (ESS) for power grid after going through a thorough evaluation process, because the project was not for isolated power grid or test bed, but for the actual power system.
On Tuesday, Samsung SDI announced that it is supplying power system link type 10MWh class ESS to Wemag, a German power company, together with Younicos of Germany.
A 10㎿h ESS is the largest in Europe. Samsung SDI is to implement two 5MWh Storage Systems, one in this year and the other next year, in a transformer station operated by Wemag in Schwerin, a northern region in Germany. Samsung supplies ESS and Younicos supplies power conversion system (PCS) and energy management system (EMS).
In the course of the electricity distribution through transformer stations to households, the power frequency fluctuates depending on the supply and demand of electricity, causing transmission loss in between. This is when the electricity stored in the ESS is released for short periods of time to stabilize power frequency and stop the loss, allowing a stable distribution of power throughout the grid.
Samsung SDI is expected to gather significant amount of reference data and know-how on operating ESS linked to the transformer station, and the company will be able to approach not only Germany but other parts of Europe for the sale of its ESS using its references.
The market for power grid ESS is expected to continue a stiff growth of 70% in annual average until 2020, taking up about half of total ESS market. The size of ESS market for power grid in 2020 is expected to be about USD 18 billion.
삼성SDI, 유럽 최대규모 10MWh급 ESS 수주
삼성SDI(대표 박상진)가 유럽 최대 규모의 전력용 에너지저장장치(ESS)를 수주했다. 독립형 전력망이나 실증단지가 아닌 실제 전력계통에 사용되는 만큼 기술력에서 높은 평가를 받았다.
삼성SDI는 독일 유니코스와 공동으로 독일 전력 업체인 베막에 전력계통 연계형 10㎿h급 ESS를 공급한다고 30일 밝혔다.
10㎿h는 유럽 내 ESS 중 가장 큰 규모다. ESS는 베막이 운영하는 독일 북부 슈베린(Schwerin) 지역의 전력망 변전소에 올해와 내년 각각 5㎿h씩 단계적으로 구축할 예정이다. 삼성SDI는 ESS를, 유니코스는 전력변환장치(PCS)와 에너지관리시스템(EMS)을 공급하는 형태다.
화력•원자력 등 발전소에서 만들어진 전력이 변전소를 거쳐 일반 가구에까지 전달되는 과정에서 전력 수요•공급에 따라 전력 주파수가 불안정해져 전력의 손실이 생긴다. 이 때 ESS를 활용해 손실을 줄일 수 있다. ESS에 저장된 전력이 짧은 시간 동안 방출돼 전력 주파수를 안정시키면서 손실을 막아 안정적인 전력망 운영이 가능하다.
삼성SDI는 변전소와 연계된 전력용 ESS의 실증 데이터 및 노하우를 다량 보유하게 돼 향후 독일뿐 아니라 유럽시장으로 수주가 확대될 것으로 전망했다.
윤여창 삼성SDI ES사업부 전무는 “올해 3월 세계 최초로 독일의 가정용 ESS 인증인 VDE를 취득한데 이어 유럽 최대 규모의 수주까지 체결하면서 유럽 시장 선점에 유리한 고지를 확보했다”며 “유니코스의 우수한 전력 제어 기술의 시너지 효과를 통해 유럽을 넘어 세계 시장을 적극 공략할 것”이라고 말했다.
삼성SDI는 지난해 독일 카코와 가정용 및 올해 초 이태리 에널에 산업용 ESS를 수주한 바 있다. 최근에는 독일의 가정용 ESS의 VDE 인증 획득을 시작으로 유럽시장 공략에 적극 나서고 있다.
변전소 등 전력용 ESS 시장은 2020년까지 연평균 70% 이상의 높은 성장세가 이어지면서 전체 ESS 시장의 절반가량을 차지할 전망이다. 2020년 전력용 ESS시장 규모는 약 180억달러다.
