SEOUL, KOREA – The small sound device industry is busy ratcheting up its marketing campaigns for NFC-enabled premium models. With a surge in the number of smartphone users, user friendless and portability have emerged as marketing keywords for small sound devices such as in-ear headphones and headsets.
According to industry insiders, sound device makers including Belkin, Sony and Zabra have increasingly equipped their premium models with wireless communications functions like NFC and Bluetooth. An industrial insider said, “Smartphones have replaced MP3 players. Thus, small sound devices like in-ear headphones are evolving into models tailored specifically for smartphone.”
Headphones with a built-in NFC chip offer quick and easy pairing with NFC-equipped smartphones, so NFC is preferred to Bluetooth that requires users to go to the Bluetooth settings and tap the On/Off switches.
Sony is moving the fastest in the market. It has recently released NFC-enabled headset “DR-BTN200” and NFC-enabled speakers (SRS-BTX500 and SRS-BTX300) in succession. Zabra has also launched NFC-enabled premium model “The Jabra Revo Wireless.” Both Sony and Zabra got rid of cables that plug their products into smartphones.

소형 음향기기, 선이 사라진다•••NFC 탑재 모델 `봇물`
소형 음향기기 업계가 근거리무선통신(NFC) 기능을 탑재한 프리미엄 제품군을 마케팅 전면에 내세우고 있다. 근래 스마트폰 사용자가 급증하면서 이어폰과 헤드폰 등 소형 음향기기의 사용자 편의성과 휴대성이 주요 마케팅 포인트로 떠올랐기 때문이다.
2일 업계에 따르면 소니, 자브라 등 음향기기 전문 업체는 최근 프리미엄 제품군을 중심으로 잇따라 NFC, 블루투스 등 무선 통신 기능을 탑재하고 있다. 업계 관계자는 “스마트폰이 기존 MP3 플레이어 등을 대체하는 개인용 음향 재생기로 자리 잡았다”며 “이어폰, 헤드폰 등 소형 음향기기도 스마트폰에 특화된 모델로 진화하는 것”이라고 설명했다.
NFC는 13.56㎒ 대역 주파수를 이용해 10㎝ 내 짧은 거리에서 단말기끼리 데이터를 상호 전송할 수 있는 기술이다. NFC 칩을 탑재한 이어폰이나 헤드폰을 NFC 기능을 지원하는 스마트폰에 접촉하면 간단히 페어링(Pairing)할 수 있다. NFC가 스마트폰 설정 메뉴에서 일일이 지원 기기를 찾아야 하는 블루투스보다 각광받는 이유다.
가장 발 빠르게 움직이고 있는 곳은 소니다. 이 회사는 최근 NFC 기능을 탑재한 헤드세트 제품인 `DR-BTN200`과 스피커 제품인 `SRS-BTX500` `SRS-BTX300`을 잇따라 선보였다. 자브라는 최근 출시한 프리미엄 모델인 `레보 와이어리스`에 NFC 기능을 넣었다. 두 회사 모두 NFC와 블루투스 기능을 활용해 스마트폰과 제품을 연결하는 케이블을 없앤 것이 특징이다.
모바일 액세서리 전문 업체도 NFC 시장에 눈독을 들이고 있다. 스마트폰을 중심으로 각종 가전은 물론이고 소형 음향기기까지 NFC 기능이 확산되면서 신성장동력으로 급부상했기 때문이다.
벨킨이 대표적이다. 이 회사는 `HD 블루투스 뮤직 리시버`를 출시했다. NFC 칩을 탑재한 안드로이드 스마트폰을 이 제품에 올려놓으면 바로 페어링할 수 있다. 연결이 완료되면 스마트폰에 담겨 있는 음악을 도킹 시스템이나 연결 케이블 없이 무선으로 즐길 수 있다. 업계 관계자는 “NFC 기능은 근래 세탁기, 에어컨 등 다양한 가전 영역으로 확대되는 추세”라며 “스마트기기에 특화된 `선 없는` 음향기기가 속속 등장할 것”이라고 말했다.
