SEOUL, KOREA – The emergence of a market for 13 megapixel camera modules is likely to stoke up competition among FPCB (Flexible Printed Circuit Board) manufacturers. Interflex, the No.1 domestic FPCB marker, is busy making preparations to break into the 130 megapixel camera module market.
According to industry insiders, Interflex, which has thus far focused on the manufacture of FPCBs for 8 megapixel camera modules, has gone into overdrive to make its production facility capable of churning out FPCBs for 13 megapixel camera modules. Growth in the number of smartphones with a 13 megapixel camera has ramped up demand for FPCB for 13 megapixel camera modules.
The FPCB industry expects that demand would surge as Samsung Electronics is poised to ship over 100 million Galaxy S4 smartphones worldwide that are equipped with 13 megapixel cameras. The number of global telecom operators to launch the Galaxy S4 will grow to 342 operators in 149 nations.
An official from Interflex said, “The existing providers of FPCBs for 13 megapixel camera modules find it hard to keep up with surging demand. Our FPCBs for 13 megapixel camera modules will go into mass production as early as the end of this month.”

1300만 화소 카메라모듈 부상... FPCB 업체 경쟁 치열해진다
1300만 화소 카메라모듈 시장이 태동하면서 연성회로기판(FPCB) 업계가 치열한 시장 경쟁을 펼칠 조짐이다. 국내 최대 FPCB 업체인 인터플렉스가 1300만 화소 시장에 진입을 서두르고 있기 때문이다.
2일 업계에 따르면 그동안 800만 화소 카메라모듈용 FPCB에 주력했던 인터플렉스(대표 배철한)는 최근 1300만 화소 FPCB 생산 채비에 적극 나서고 있다. 최근 출시되는 스마트폰에 1300만 화소 카메라모듈이 확산되면서 FPCB 수요가 늘고 있기 때문이다.
FPCB 업계는 1300만 화소 카메라모듈을 탑재한 삼성전자의 갤럭시S4만 최다 1억대 판매를 예상하는 만큼 카메라모듈 수요도 급증할 것으로 보고 있다. 갤럭시S4 초기 예약 물량은 2400만대 수준으로 세계 149개 국가 342개 통신사업자로 판매를 확대할 예정이다.
인터플렉스 관계자는 “기존 업체만으로는 1300만 화소 카메라모듈용 FPCB 공급이 수요를 따라갈 수 없다”며 “이르면 이달 내 양산에 들어갈 수 있을 것”이라고 말했다.
인터플렉스는 1300만 화소 카메라모듈용 FPCB 시장 진입을 통해 수익성 개선도 기대하고 있다. 1300만 화소 카메라모듈용 FPCB는 800만 화소용 제품보다 평균판매가격이 약 20% 가량 높은 것으로 알려졌다.
1300만 화소 카메라모듈용 FPCB를 양산중인 기존 업체들은 후발 주자들의 시장 진입을 막기 위해 생산 능력을 확대할 계획이다. 당장 대덕GDS가 공장 증설에 나섰다. 3분기부터 새 공장을 가동할 계획이다. 또한 1300만 화소 카메라모듈용 FPCB는 수율을 올리기 쉽지 않다는 점에서 당분간 시장 선점 효과를 기대하고 있다. 800만 화소 카메라모듈용 FPCB와 달리 제품 평탄도(flatness)가 다르고 정밀도가 높다.
업계 관계자는 “기존 업체가 시장 방어에 나서겠지만 후발 주자들과의 싸움은 치열해 질 것”이라며 “시장에서 1300만 화소 카메라모듈이 부상하고 있는 만큼 앞으로 관련 FPCB 생산은 더 늘어날 것”이라고 말했다.
1300만 화소 카메라모듈은 갤럭시S4 이외에도 LG전자 옵티머스G 프로, 팬택 베가 아이언 등 주요 스마트폰 제조사 주력 모델을 중심으로 탑재되고 있다. 올해 세계 휴대폰 카메라모듈 시장에서 1300만 화소 카메라모듈 비중은 전년보다 5배 성장한 10%로 예상된다.
