SEOUL, KOREA - KT Submarine announced on May 15 that it signed a contract with NEC, a Japan-based company, to construct international submarine fiber-optic cables spanning the Asia-Pacific region.
The international submarine cable project will be implemented by a consortium comprised of 13 communications service providers including KT, NTT, China Telecom and others from nine countries. Korea, China, Japan, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia and the rest three nations will be connected through the cables to meet the ever increasing demand for international communications among the countries.
The local telecommunications company is going to handle the construction part of the project by using special-purpose ships and equipment. The contract price for the part is known to be about KRW 40.6 billion, accounting for 60% of the sales the company made in the previous year.
Starting the cable landing job at Busan in the end of the month, the project is schedule to be completed in December, 2014.
The local company is going to put into the project cutting-edge cable ships, a 3M plough and an unmanned undersea vehicle.
“It is our experience in constructing and maintaining submarine cables and developing related technologies accumulated for the last 19 years that won the contract. We are planning to win other contracts this year by enhancing our marketing capabilities,” says Lee Jae-ryun, the president of KT Submarine.
KT서브마린, 406억원 규모 국제해저광케이블 건설 계약 체결
KT서브마린(사장 이재륜)이 일본 NEC에서 발주한 아시아 태평양 지역 국제해저광케이블 건설 계약을 체결했다고 15일 밝혔다.
이번 해저케이블공사는 동남아 지역의 급증하는 국제 통신 수요를 해결하기 위해 KT, NTT, 차이나텔레콤 등 동남아시아 9개국 13개 통신사업자 컨소시엄이 공동 추진하는 대규모 국제 프로젝트다. 한국, 중국, 일본, 대만, 싱가폴, 말레이시아 등 9개국을 연결한다.
KT서브마린은 전체 프로젝트 중 특수선박과 장비를 활용한 건설 공사를 담당한다. 해당 공사 부분의 수주 금액은 약 406억원으로 전년도 매출의 60%에 해당한다.
이달 말 부산 송정해수욕장에서 케이블 양육 작업을 시작해 2014년 12월 준공이 목표다.
KT서브마린은 세계로호와 미래로호를 비롯해 최신 3M PLOUGH(매설기), 무인 수중 잠수정(ROV)등 첨단 장비를 투입한다.
이재륜 KT서브마린 사장은 “지난 19년간 해저케이블 시공과 유지보수 수행 경험, 기술력을 대외적으로 인정 받은 것”이라며 “마케팅 역량을 집중해 올 한해 다양한 프로젝트 수주에 박차를 가할 계획”이라고 밝혔다.
