SEOUL, KOREA - Korea's information technology ranking for this year was evaluated at 11th in the world. According to the Global Information Technology Report 2013 published by the World Economic Forum on May 19, Korea's Networked Readiness Index (NRI) was ranked 11th in the world out of 144 countries. Even though it was one notch higher than last year's, Korea was unable to move up to the level of top-ten countries.
NRI, calculated by the World Economic Forum and INSEAD, ranks 144 economies based on their capacity to exploit the opportunities offered by the digital age. The capacity is determined by the quality of the regulatory, business and innovation environments, the degree of preparedness, the actual usage of ICTs, as well as the societal and economic impacts of ICTs. The assessment is based on a broad range of indicators from Internet access and adult literacy to mobile phone subscriptions and the availability of venture capital.
Under this criterion, Korea was ranked at ninth in 2007 and 2008, followed by 11th in 2009, 15th in 2010, 10th in 2011, and 12th in 2012. One of the factors that kept Korea from rising further on the list was "affordability." In terms of price for fixed-line and wireless communications services, Korea was ranked 83rd in the world.
The No. 1 country on the NRI ranking was Finland, followed by Singapore, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Norway. The second-tier group countries such as Switzerland, the United States, Denmark, the United Kingdom, and Taiwan took the No. 6 to No. 10 spots. Japan moved down three notches to 14th from last year's 11th, while China fell to the level of 58th from 51st last year.
