SEOUL, KOREA – Fingerprint recognition has emerged as one of the key smartphone functions. Following Apple, Samsung Electronics is also known to work on the introduction of fingerprint recognition technology to its next-generation smartphone.
According to SamMobile (www.sammobile.com), Samsung Electronics is making preparations to add a fingerprint recognition technology to the Galaxy S. SamMobile claimed that Samsung Electronics inserted fingerprint recognition to the home button and conducted experiments on relevant apps.
The iPhone 5S is also highly likely to come with fingerprint authentication. Business Insider reported that Apple’s secret feature for the iPhone 5S was rumored to be fingerprint identification technology. Many believe that the iPhone 5S will have fingerprint technologies as Apple acquired Authentec, which made a fingerprint scanning chip, last July.
Fingerprint technology was applied to laptop computers, but it was not well received due to problems related to recognition speed and accuracy. Thus, smartphone manufactures have to overcome such problems not to walk down the same path as the fingerprint technologies applied to laptop computers.

스마트폰 이번에 `지문인식` 대전…애플 이어 삼성도 적용하나
지문인식이 차세대 스마트폰 핵심 기능으로 떠올랐다. 애플에 이어 삼성전자도 차세대 스마트폰에 지문인식 기능을 도입할 것으로 알려졌다.
22일 삼성 뉴스 전문 사이트인 삼모바일은 삼성전자가 갤럭시 스마트폰에 지문인식 기능을 준비 중이라고 보도했다. 삼모바일은 삼성전자가 스마트폰 홈 버튼에 지문인식 기능을 넣고 이와 관계된 애플리케이션을 시험했다고 주장했다. 삼성전자가 지문인식 도입을 적극 검토한 것으로 분석된다.
올여름 출시되는 애플 아이폰5S도 지문인식 기술 적용이 유력하다. 비즈니스인사이더는 아이폰5S의 가장 큰 특징은 지문인식 기술이라고 전했다. 애플이 지난해 지문인식기업 오센텍을 인수하면서 차기 제품에 적용 가능성이 끊이지 않았다.
IT전문 미디어 테크뉴스도 최근 애플 부품공급사를 인용해 아이폰5S에 지문을 인식할 수 있는 터치센서 홈버튼이 쓰일 것이라고 보도했다. 홈버튼은 고릴라 글라스보다 강도가 세 배 이상 높은 사파이어 크리스털로 제작될 예정이다. 아이폰 잠금 해제는 물론이고 은행거래와 전자상거래 사용자 인증에 활용할 수 있다.
지문인식 기술은 노트북에 적용됐지만 인식 속도와 정확도 문제로 큰 호응을 얻지 못했다. 스마트폰 역시 이 한계를 극복하고 다양한 사용처를 발굴해야 쓸모없는 기능으로의 전락을 막을 수 있다.
