SEOUL, KOREA - A small bicycle parts developer of Korea has raised a lawsuit against the world's biggest bicycle maker to the tune of 2 trillion won. MBI Co., the company holding several patents in transmissions for bicycles, motorized bicycles, and electric scooters, held press conferences in Seoul and Ochang (North Chungcheong Province) and said, "We sued Japan's Shimano, Inc. in Chinese and Dutch courts for patent infringement and sought injunctions on production, importation, and sale of the bicycles."
A company official said, "We won last month in a court case raised in a U.S. Federal court by Shimano over bicycle transmissions. Now we are suing the company for patent infringements in courts in China and the Netherlands."
The patent dispute between the two companies goes back five years to 2008 when MBI sued Shimano in a Dusseldorf (Germany) court over a patent infringement case asking for 1 trillion won for compensation. The case was thrown out by the judge. Afterward, Shimano has made claims of patent invalidity in courts in Japan, China, Europe, and the United States. MBI won in all these cases.
