ETRI showcases various new technologies

The world telecommunication market is emerging with priority given to Asia, primarily Korea and China. As Asia accounts for 7 companies among the top 10 profitable telecommunication companies, this region is showing a remarkable increased demand pace. Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) President Choi Mun-kee said that ETRI's participation in this ITU Telecom will servee as a good opportunity to acquaint the world with Korea's IT power and development ability. This can create demand within the telecommunication market for Korean products and services.

During the five days of December 4 to 8, which will be held in the Hong Kong Asia World Expo four years after the Swiss ITU Telecom, ETRI will showcase the Institute's cutting-edge core technology. This event is sometimes referred to as the Telecommunication Olympics.

ETRI will introduce many state-of-the-art IT technologies, such as Personalized Data Broadcasting, Open Home Network Framework, a Digital Broadcasting Media Server, Mobile RFID, a Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop System, the WE-PON system, Adaptivie Threat Prevention System, ATCA-based EPON/GPON OLT, Terrestrial-DMB, a Wearable Personal Station, and Human Body Communication technology, according to Choi.

Choi explained: 'ETRI plans to exhibit in an experience form with excellent research outcome as well as transfer technology as its object.' Moreover, ETRI is hoping to attract lucrative overseas partners with its marketing activities.

This year's ITU Telecom World 2006 supervised by ITU, on one hand, is expected to garner a total of 325 companies from 25 countries.

Especially, world renowned electronics companies are scheduled to demonstrate their new IT technologies including 5 large-sized national pavilions from Hong Kong, Russia, India, France and Canada and separate enterprises like Ericsson, Fujitsu, NEC, Samsung, LG, Huawei Technology.

Here are more details about which technologies ETRI will showcase at the ITU Telecom World 2006:

Personalized Data Broadcasting: provides users with appropriate broadcasting content in a diverse telecommunication broadcasting convergence environment

Open Home Network Framework: broadcasting and telecommunication services such as VoD, broadcasting, and tailor-made web services through one home server in a home network environment

Digital Broadcasting Media Server: server platform technology that can offer VoD and IPTV services in IP networks and cable networks

Mobile RFID: standalone handset or cellular phone attachment that provides users with product information after reading ID tag attached to the product

Reconfigurable Optical Add-Drop System: establishes channels or dissolves by a wave length unit by means of automatic and remote provision in a network

Adaptive Threat Prevention System: defends networks in real time from cyber attacks such as Worms and Denial of Service

WE-PON System: optical subscriber network system which increases existing subscriber time-sharing methods by using wavelength division transmission

ATCA-based EPON/GPON OLT: conveys subscribers with data and images through optical cables in a transmission distance over 20Km

Terrestrial-DMB System: diverse data broadcasting service which gives television shows and other information such as traffic conditions and route information

Wearable Personal Station: recognizes gestures and voice orders with mobile gateway functions and a wearable personal server

Human Body Communication: exchanges data between information terminals on a human body using the body as its transmission medium.
