SEOUL, KOREA – The Wow phone, launched jointly by Uticom Korea and Homeplus’s Plus Mobile, is gathering much attention for its low price. The Wow phone is the first smartphone that goes for below KRW 100,000 in South Korea.
The 3.5 inch Wow phone sells at a lower price than other smartphone since it is equipped with a TFT LCD. This low-end Android 4.0 smartphone has a resolution of 480*320 pixels and 512MB internal storage and is powered by a 1GHz single-core processor. It features a 0.3 megapixel front camera and a 2 megapixel rear-facing camera.
From the perspective of hardware, the Wow smartphone compares unfavorably with other latest high-end smartphones. However, given that latest smartphones fetch over KRW 900,000, the Wow phone, priced at KRW 99,000, is very tempting.
For those who mainly use simple functions like mobile messenger KakaoTalk and web surfing, the Wow phone is a good buy. Besides, if users opt for MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) payment plans, their smartphone bills will go further down.

"가격이 싸도 될 건 다 된다"…와우폰 써보니
`9만9000원 스마트폰도 다 된다`
유티컴(대표 김성하)이 홈플러스 플러스모바일과 함께 출시한 `와우폰`이 저렴한 가격으로 화제다. 공식 판매가(9만9000원)가 10만원 이하인 스마트폰은 국내 최초다.
와우폰을 접한 첫 느낌은 무난한 디자인과 한 손에 쏙 들어오는 그립감이 만족도를 줬다. 액정은 3.5인치 TFT-LCD를 채택해 단가를 낮췄는데 다른 디스플레이와 큰 차이를 느끼기 어려웠다. 다만 실내에서는 괜찮지만, 햇빛이 밝은 야외에서 시인성이 떨어지는 것은 단점이다.
해상도는 320×480(HVGA)이고, CPU는 1㎓ 싱글코어를 사용한다. 내장 메모리는 512MB지만, 4GB 외장 메모리를 기본 제공하고 최대 32GB까지 확장할 수 있다. 운용체계(OS)는 안드로이드 4.0을 채택했다. 카메라는 전면 30만화소, 후면 200만 화소다.
하드웨어 사양만 놓고 보면 최신 스마트폰 제품에 비해 한참 떨어진다. 하지만 최신 스마트폰은 90만원대, 와우폰은 9만9000원임을 감안하면 불만이 생기기 어렵다.
검색이나 카카오톡 등 간단한 기능만 필요한 사용자라면 와우폰이 좋은 대안이다. 더구나 통신요금도 기존 통신사보다 저렴한 알뜰폰(MVNO) 요금제를 사용하면 통신비 절약 효과가 두드러진다.
듀얼 유심을 지원하는 장점도 있다. 3G와 2G 듀얼 유심을 지원해 해외 여행 시 현지에서 2G 유심을 구입해 저렴하게 사용하는 것이 가능하다. 홈플러스 앱을 제외하면 이통사가 선탑재한 앱이 없는 것도 특징이다.
사후관리(AS)는 전국 AS센터를 보유한 동부대우전자서비스를 통해 1년간 무상수리를 지원한다. 저렴한 가격이지만, 액정보호필름과 가죽케이스도 무상으로 제공한다. 현재 와우폰은 홈플러스 전국 매장에서 판매 중이다.
