SEOUL, KOREA - During the summer months of July and August, Seoul's all subway lines will reduce their services in order to save electricity consumption. The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on June 10 a plan to save energy during the upcoming summer months by cutting subway services by 12.5 percent. Once the new plan is implemented, subway service intervals from No. 1 to No. 9 would be lengthened by 1 minute during the busy hours between 10 am and 5 pm.

For two months, the average number of subway cars in operation will be cut down to 919 from current 1,050. The energy-conservation plan is expected to save a total of 11,500 kilowatts during the peak hours.

In addition, the Seoul government will impose a fine of up to 3 million won to those stores and offices running air-conditioners with doors open from July 1. Those commercial establishments violating the 26 degree Celsius rule and turning up air-conditioners below that temperature would be fined between 500,000 and 3 million won from August 1 after one month of "guidance" period.
