Seoul, Korea - Vehicle IT Convergence Association held the 2013 Automotive IT Convergence Technology Conference in Seoul to discuss the ways to strengthen the competitiveness of Korean automotive IT.

Kyungyoo Kim, a researcher from Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade (KIET) made a presentation on ‘the change of part sales relationships as a result of IT convergence in automobile industry’ and claimed that the cooperation between the leaders of automotive and IT industries is a must for Korean automotive industry to be the leader of smart cars.

According to Kim, the importance of automotive IT has significantly grown – the portion of electronics in automobile production cost is expected to grow from 19% in 2004 to 40% in 2015. The market demand for advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) is expected to grow at the annual average rate of 18.5%, from 51 million units in 2012 to 140 million units in 2018.

However, the Korean automotive industry is not catching up with such trend fast enough, and the result was very poor rate of localized core parts. The portion of imported materials as of 2009 in the individual elements was 81% and in the automotive semiconductors was 98.38%. The portion of imports in automotive electronics was 35.1%, while the portion of imports in overall automobile industry was only 13.83%.

The automotive IT market is growing, but most of the benefit from the growth is taken by foreign IT companies. The automotive semiconductor market is dominated by European and American semiconductor companies, including Freescale and Infinion, for example.

Kim suggested, “the major electronics companies and automobile industry must work together, and an unprecedentedly creative collaboration can take place.”
