Kumho Asiana Group's representative IT affiliate Asiana IDT (www.asianaidt.com) held a ground-breaking ceremony for its new Songdo RFID/USN R&D Center on October 2 while President and CEO Park Keun Sik and other executives were on hand.

The Asiana IDT RFID/USN research building is scheduled to be constructed with a first floor underground and a second floor above ground. The total floor area will be 4,227 square meters.

In an exclusive interview with the Korea IT Times on the occasion of the RFID/USN 2007 Exhibition, President Park said: "Asiana IDT is in the process of constructing its RFID/USN business strategy so that all R&D outcome materials of the RFID/USN R&D Center can be linked directly to business."

Since being registered as an annex R&D Center on July, 2005, Asiana IDT has acquired several notable certifications. It has qualified for the international EPC Global certification, and a certification from the Ministry of Information and Communication and the Telecommunication Technology Association regarding readers and middleware through its joint R&D cooperation with the Electronics Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI) despite its relatively short existence.

Furthermore, the company has business activities under way alongside the launching of its product line which includes RFID system composition equipment and readers, antennas, tags and middleware, according to Park.

Park stressed: "By completing its R&D Center building within Songdo Knowledge Information Industry Complex in the second half of 2008, Asiana IDT will maximize synergy effects with surrounding RFID/USNrelated companies in the Complex.

Further, Asiana IDT is committed to the RFID/USN field by increasing research manpower and research infrastructure in the years to come, he said.

Price disputes

Recently the Korean government has made RFID tag usage mandatory for government organizations. Park assessed this move positively, explaining that if tag use becomes obligatory, production will increase, tag price will decline, and technology development will be facilitated.

In order to achieve a feasible tag price, technological development and mass production systems are preconditions, he added. However for the present, tags are too expensive for many corporations to stick to it promptly, Park pointed out.

Regarding Asiana IDT's strategy to preoccupy the future demand in preparation for RFID sticking obligation, the President mentioned: "Our RFID/USN R&D Center has been operated strategically with a mind of the three philosophies Selection and Concentration, Independent Differentiation Technology, and Competitiveness Strengthening of Differentiated Superiority."

For instance, Asiana IDT has first of all studied the global market to determine the best technological niche field for the company to enter. It has also paid attention to possible business partnerships with surrounding companies which hold the predominant positions in the global corporate environment.

As a result, Asiana IDT was able to secure a number of new patents, register a number of new technologies and launch a number of new products during the last two years when they committed themselves to R&D, Park emphasized.

The president noted that because its R&D Center is working on the commercialization of a technology which is internationally standardized, Asiana IDT included many optimal customizing features on its products.

"So if you like, 100% recognition is possible and pays off in all sorts of projects currently," Park proudly said. Park also said he believes Asiana IDT's several cutting-edge technologies will be embossed in the landscape of the market as time goes on.

RFID requirements urgently needed

During the RFID/USN 2007 Exhibition Asiana IDT is going to showcase its special tag applications including aviation Unit Road Device (ULD) tags and parking solution tags.

It will also showcase all sorts of RFID systems and its readers, antennas, and middleware.

Asiana IDT's tags are special tags tailored to group affiliate business content as can be seen through aviation luggage tags and ULD tags. For example, aviation ULD tags have 100% recognition within a 4 meter radius through up to 10 aviation luggage plates.

In the 2007 RFID/EPC industry exhibition held in May Asiana IDT acquainted buyers and visitors from home and abroad with its RFID readers, antennas, tags and middleware integration solutions offering technological ability and optimal RFID environment consulting through radio wave environment analysis.

Regarding its Mobile RFID Service as well, the persons concerned at Asiana IDT explained:

"Mobile RFID to lead the mobile world is possible if it shares Asiana IDT's middleware, ULink." They added that Mobile RFID Service is a Ubiquitous service which allows users to actualize a hyperlink between online and offline objects centering on RFID tagged materials.

RFID technology allows the U-Life by providing users with useful information and application services in all of a customer's life spheres by means of a combination of cellular phones and mobile communication infrastructure, Park said.

What is noteworthy in recent

Asiana IDT business partnerships is that the company is planning to drive forward a mutually beneficial strategy through reciprocal cooperation relations with a number of associated companies in the years to come.

Last August Asiana IDT concluded an agreement with Shinsegye I&C concerning joint market pioneering and collaboration.

About this MOU with Shinsegye I&C, CEO Park commented: "It is expected to play a positive role for the activation of the domestic RFID market by serving as a momentum to make RFID introduction of Shinsegye Group and Kumho Asiana Group earlier that are assessed to hold the largest potential demand in local RFID market."

With regard to tasking for the activation of the Korean RFID/USN industry, Park said that he believes that first a technical frequency revision law doubling the current frequency bandwidth is necessary.

The quick settlement and execution of mandatory RFID tag usage that the government is already preparing will serve as a good opportunity to grow the RFID/USN industry, he said.

Park also spoke about local companies pioneering in the overseas market by pointing out: "If domestic semiconductor business circles concentrate their efforts on securing competitiveness through full-scale technology cooperation with associated RFID/USN business circles, it is sufficiently possible either to pioneer the overseas market or to secure in terms of technology and price competitiveness."

For instance, regarding the tag price problem, which is the largest issue in this field, if domestic semiconductor businesses are able to find a way to cheaply and affordably design and mass produce RFID chips, Park said he believes that true competitiveness is possible.

Last but not least, Park concluded by saying that an atmosphere of preparation and confrontation is necessary to succeed in the global market.
