Seoul, Korea - The scientists succeeded in making a lithium-ion battery of a sand grain size using a 3D printer.

The Science Daily reported on the 19th that the scientists at Harvard and University of Illinois, Urbana Champaign (UIUC) published a thesis in an international academic journal and claimed that a super-small battery can be made by a 3D printer.

The super-small batteries can bring a breakthrough in medical and telecommunication technologies. Super-small devices, such as medical devices implanted inside human bodies, flying robots imitating insects and super-small camera and microphone to be installed inside a pair of glass frame, had been attempted but failed, because their batteries were too big to make them ‘micro’ devices.

The scientists made the super-small battery by stacking up thin films of solid material. With the existing methods, the ultra-thin batteries failed to store enough energy. The scientists found that greater amount of energy could be stored when the ultra-thin electrodes are three-dimensionally interlocked and stacked up and tried the idea with a 3D printer.

The scientists were able to produce custom-made super-small batteries using a variety of functional inks with chemical and electric properties. Such batteries are claimed to have the level of performance similar to that of existing commercial batteries in charging/discharging speed, cycle lifespan and energy density.
