SEOUL, KOREA – Samsung Electronics, Apple and HTC will launch smartphones boasting innovative anti-heat technologies.On Thursday, Taiwan’s Digi Times quoted an official from the cooling pad industry as saying that global major smartphone manufactures have shown an interest in ultra slim anti-heat pipes that can adjust temperatures in an easy, simple manner. Taiwan’s Digi Times reported that temperature adjustable smartphones will come out in the fourth quarter of this year.
As smartphones have to handle increasing data volumes, heat-related problems have arisen accordingly. Anti-heat pipes will let liquids circulate to cool the temperature of the smartphone. Japan’s NEC has recently released the Medias X06E, the first smartphone equipped with an anti-heat pipe, which is only 0.6 mm in diameter - more than 50% thinner than the 1.2 mm cooling pipe inserted into the Intel Ultrabook.
As of now, a handful of companies, including Japan’s Furukawa Electric Co. and Taiwan’s Chaun-Choung Technology, Auras Electronics and TaiSol Electronics, are capable of mass-producing 0.6mm cooling pipes. Meanwhile, their production yield stands at a mere 30%, so cooling pipes are feared to be in extremely short supply.

삼성, 애플, HTC 등 주요 스마트폰 제조사들이 획기적인 방열 기술을 적용한 스마트폰을 연내 내놓는다.
20일 디지타임스는 쿨링패드 업계 관계자의 말을 인용해 이들 주요 스마트폰 제조사가 간편하게 온도를 조절할 수 있는 초박형 방열 파이프에 관심을 보인다고 보도했다. 디지타임스는 이를 적용한 스마트폰이 4분기에 나온다고 전했다.
스마트폰이 처리해야 할 데이터가 늘어나면서 발열 문제도 심각해졌다. 방열 파이프는 액체를 흘려보내 스마트폰 열을 식힌다. 일본 NEC는 최근 업계 최초로 방열 파이프가 들어간 스마트폰 `미디어스X06E`를 출시했다. 이 스마트폰에 들어간 방열 파이프는 지름이 0.6㎜에 불과하다. 인텔 울트라북 냉각 파이프 1.2㎜보다 절반 가까이 얇다.
냉각 파이프 기반의 쿨링패드 모듈 업계 경쟁도 점차 치열해지는 상황이다. 0.6㎜ 냉각 파이프를 양산하는 업체는 일본의 후루카와전자를 비롯해 대만의 천총전자, 아우라스, 태솔전자 정도다. 반면 냉각 파이프의 수율은 고작 30%에 그쳐 극심한 공급 부족이 예상된다.
