The 3rd Digital Opportunity Forum, sponsored by the Ministry of Information and Communication (MIC) and the Korea Agency for Digital Opportunity and Promotion, began on September 19, 2007. This year's theme is Informed Senior Citizens and the Power of the Elderly in an Aging Society. Here, ways to encourage aging populations to participate in an information society were suggested.
In celebration of October 2, Senior Citizens' Day, the Forum examines the digital opportunities that have been provided for senior citizens so far. It goes on to find a way to encourage and assist the elderly to actively take a role in today's information society. The government's undying support to shorten the information gap increased the number of senior internet users from 9.3% to 28.3% within four years, yet that number is still too low. Senior associations and the senior citizens who are actively participating in the society through information technology will join the discussion as representatives of their generation to state problems and difficulties that senior citizens encounter in an aging society. The main focus of the discussion is to state any difficulties that the elderly may encounter in using IT, how they will contribute to society with the IT knowledge they gain, and real examples of seniors' vital role in the application of IT.
