SEOUL, KOREA – South Korea’s foreign reserves fell to a seven month low after declining for two straight months. According to the Bank of Korea, South Korea’ foreign reserves stood at USD 326.44 billion as of the end of June, down USD 1.66 billion from the month before.
South Korea’s foreign reserves, which hit an all-time high of USD 328.91 billion in January of this year, fell to USD 327.4 billion in February and ticked up to USD 327.41 billion in March and to USD 328.8 in April. South Korea’s foreign reserves then slid to USD 328.1 billion in May and further to a seven month low of USD 326.44 billion in June.
Securities made up 90.5% (or USD 295.57 billion) of South Korea’s foreign reserves. South Korea’s foreign reserves retained its seventh largest position in the world as of the end of May. The No.1 spot was taken by China, followed by Japan, Russia, Switzerland, Taiwan and Brazil.

외환보유액 두달 연속 감소로 7개월만에 최저
외환보유액이 두달 연속 줄어 7개월 만에 최저 수준으로 떨어졌다.
3일 한국은행에 따르면 6월말 현재 외환보유액은 3264억4000만달러로 한달 전보다 16억6000만달러 줄어든 것으로 집계됐다.
외환보유액은 지난 1월 3289억1000만달러로 사상 최고를 기록하고서 2월 3274억달러로 떨어진 뒤 3월 3274억1000만달러, 4월 3288억달러 등 두달 연속 증가하다가 5월(3281억달러)부터 줄고있다. 이로써 6월말 외환보유액은 작년 11월(3260억9000만달러)이후 최저 수준이 됐다.
외환보유액 구성은 유가증권이 2955억7000만달러(90.5%)로 가장 많고 예치금 200억3000만달러(6.1%), 금 47억9000만달러(1.5%), 국제통화기금 특별인출권(SDR) 34억1000만달러(1.0%), 국제통화기금(IMF) 포지션 26억3000만달러(0.8%) 등 순이다. 5월말 기준 한국의 외환보유액은 세계 7위로 전월과 같았다. 1위는 중국(3조4426억달러)이고 일본(1조2502억달러), 러시아(5184억달러), 스위스(5148억달러), 대만(4066억달러), 브라질(3744억달러) 등이 그 뒤를 이었다.
