"U-Construction is all about ID. It proves the cliche that anything is possible," director of Future-X project Yu Sang-yeul began by defining ubiquitous construction. "Project Future-X is a name of a U-town that will be built in Daejun province. This particular town is nothing like the previous state-promoted new towns. We are actually rebuilding the entire town from a previous town, Eunhangdong."

On August 2007, Future-X project finally met all listed requirements to actually start construction. This is exactly a year and half after related companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to construct the Future-X U-city back in 2005. All the necessary procedures to receive official authentication to demolish and reconstruct Eunhangdong is done. Director Yu is also the vice president of Albatrosplus real estate agency.

Albatrosplus and IT companies involving Samsung SDS, KT, LG, CNS, and LG Electronics have together been sketching the project plans. The entire cost to build Future-X is predicted to be US$2 trillion and 15-20% of this relates to the Information Technology that will be put in this town to add a ubiquitous life. Starting from October 2008, construction is planned to be finished by 2012 on a 1 million square meter area. One of the multiplex buildings will be sixty floors tall. Since all the country's top leading IT companies like Samsung SDS, KT, LG CNS and venture businesses from Taeduk Research and Development special zone are putting heads together on the project, it wouldn't be an exaggeration to say that Future-X will be spoiled with the country's top technologies.

Why X

"Imagine a town where everything could be taken care of at once within a building complex. COEX Mall, for an instance, is always crowded because it is convenient and easy-to-access for most common activities. Think of what is in COEX Mall. As soon as one is dropped at the subway station, he can access Hyundai Department Store, the Intercontinental Hotel, movie theater, aquarium, Assem Tower, Korea City Air Terminal, shopping centers, food court, book store, and post office, all in one area. But what is it missing

The resident areas," Director Yu pointed out. "That is the vision of Eunhangdong Future-X Project. Not only will ubiquitous life add safety to living, but also an easy-to-access living condition where one can take care of errands at one place, within one building, if possible."

The X in the project name comes from the layout of the construction. The city will be constructed in the path of the letter X. Four main buildings will be built at each vertex point and every building will be connected with skyway bridges. The planned buildings include the 60 floor Landmark Tower Hotel, department store, various commercial stores, and 5 resident multiplex buildings that will hold 2112 families.

"Future X will provide the best condition for business, education, and residents. How much walking can people handle in a day U-town should be planned and designed to provide every facility within a perimeter around the city," Director Yu stated. Director Yu has been and is still studying various theme parks and urban redevelopment cases in Japan, America, and Europe to plan, design, and establish the Eunhangdong Future-X. "I think of two things as I design the city. One is to make it as a business model so that it will be profitable. Next is to attract merchants, residents, and visitors to spend money and fully use the building," Director Yu said.

Spoiled with ubiquitous technology

The Broadband Convergence Network (BCN) will be put in Future-X that converges communication and broadcast data. Phone calls or way of communication within the building will be free of charge. The most amazing story is the town's supply of cell phones that detects individuals and matter. For those who have a working position in Eunhangdon Future-X, a cell phone with voice recognition, multi-remote control, and payment functions will be supplied. The suitable phone bill plan will be set along the services mentioned above.

"Picture yourself sitting in a food court in a ubiquitous area," Director Yu questioned, "how would you pay for your food" Smart Cards and multi-function remote controls will allow customers to point at the neon sign of a restaurant and read the day's menu, the prices to order, and comments from the chef. Payment part will also be easily taken care with the cell phone itself with the Smart Card equipped within. Thirty different business models including special product shop solutions will be developed based on RFID technology.

Each business model will contribute to create a direct profit model. "Let's say a woman in Eunhangdong Future-X is looking for a coke in the nearest place from where she stands. Her cell phone will find a coke that is closest to her and navigate the location on the screen by finding the radio frequency identified [RFID] coke," Director Yu gave an example. Future-X holds every facility that can be used in the BCN environment including administration, civil applications, education, finances, weather forecasting, traffic news, and healthcare. Not only that, hydrogen fuel cells will be used throughout the city in consideration of environmental issues. This hydrogen fuel cell will provide the city with a system that never has a blackout throughout the year while conserving energy. In spite of the full time use of electricity, residents will find surprisingly low electricity bills.

Future-X, work of all

Samsung SDS is in charge of the communication network, ID cognition, and converged service payment plan. The core network of the town, will guarantee 1Gbps in the usage of BCN. All-IP concept will be applied to telephone networks and CCTV. In case IP addresses run out in the city, IPv6 equipment is being developed as a backup plan. Location cognition solutions will be upgraded with the development of RFID and will be applied to individual cell phones and be blended with location cognition services.

KT is in charge of the Intelligent Building System (IBS), facility management system, and the control tower management system to apply previous building management business know-how. KT's biggest project now is to find a profitable model that reduces the cost of management.

LG CNS is responsible for the servers of the building complex management control system and synthesizing the database design. LG CNS takes full responsibility for physical security of Future-X such as CCTV and control of entry. A 30 meter screen ceiling will be put on Future-X in comparison to the Canopy Multimedia Display System. LG Electronics on the other hand is in charge of establishing the home networks of 2112 families. A team named IT Construction Management (CM), was organized last June with Future- X participating expert companies to define the interface and validity of every ubiquitous service. Also the team mediates the role of each participant and relationship as well as the inspection and test of the services. "Future-X will be the final work of art of each field's best experts. Each of their creativity and competitive technology will put as one to create a prestigious U-city," Director Yu Sang-yeul proudly stated. Future-X will be the first step to the realization of the Ubiquitous Life. The creation of upcoming city models is expected to be exported to other cities and foreign countries as an outstanding case of a profitable ubiquitous business model.
