SEOUL, KOREA – The first installment of national task “Scientific Korean Wave Project” will be implemented in Cambodia. South Korea will put up a global water purification technology center in Cambodia, where drinking water pollution caused by heavy metals (such as arsenic) poses a danger to people on a daily basis. The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP) and National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) unveiled on July 5 “The 2013 Science and Technology Support Program for Developing Nations,” which consists of eight new tasks.
One of the eight tasks will be implemented this year in Cambodia. The idea of building a water technology center in Cambodia was presented by Scientist and Engineers Without Borders, which is comprised of Seoul National University, Dankook University, Bukyung University and GETC Co. etc. Scientist and Engineers Without Borders will team up with NPIC (National Polytechnic Institude of Cambodia) to comprehensively carry out the task, ranging from technology development and education to pilot operations and commercialization.
Chief researcher Dok Go-seok of Scientist and Engineers Without Borders, said, “We will expand the center to a reginal hub in Asia that takes care of water problems not only in Cambodia but also in other developing nations in Asia.”

캄보디아 오염된 물, `식수`로 정화…`과학한류` 전파
국정과제인 `과학한류 창출 프로젝트` 첫 번째 사업이 캄보디아에서 펼쳐진다. 비소 등 중금속으로 인한 식수 오염으로 몸살을 앓는 캄보디아에 우리나라가 글로벌 물 적정기술 거점센터를 설치한다. 미래창조과학부와 한국연구재단은 5일 개도국의 역량 개발과 지속 가능한 발전을 지원하는 `2013년도 개도국 과학기술 지원사업` 신규과제 8개를 선정해 발표했다.
선정 과제는 우리나라와 개도국의 대학•연구기관 간 교류협력을 지원하는 `기관간 과학기술협력사업` 7개와 개도국 주민의 삶의 질을 높여주는 `적정과학기술 지원사업` 1개로 구성됐다.
이 가운데 적정과학기술 지원사업은 과학한류 창출 프로젝트의 하나로 올해 처음으로 추진되는 것이다. 이 사업에서는 `국경 없는 과학기술자회`가 제안한 `캄보디아 글로벌 물 적정기술 현지거점센터 구축`이 선정됐다. 서울대, 단국대, 부경대, 그린엔텍 등 다양한 국내 기관들이 참여하는 국경 없는 과학기술자회는 캄보디아 국립기술대(NPIC)와 협력해 캄보디아의 물 문제를 해결하는 기술개발•교육•시범사업•상용화 등을 종합적으로 수행할 계획이다.
이 단체의 연구책임자인 독고석 사무총장은 “캄보디아뿐 아니라 아시아 지역 전체 개도국의 물 문제를 해결할 수 있는 거점센터로 확대하겠다”고 밝혔다.
