Seoul, Korea - Korea Yakult is going to replace its 12,000 delivery hand carts with the ones powered by electric motors. This seems to be aimed to promote environmentally friendly corporate image and improve the working condition of delivery ladies. Korea Yakult has not yet decided whether delivery cart will be designed to be driven or pushed. The company will deal with all the relevant processes independently, from design, development, to the installation and management of recharge infrastructure. The company plans to conduct a pilot test by the end of this month and decide detailed specifications and replacement period of the carts by the end of this year. The test will focus on security, battery efficiency and operational convenience in consideration of driving environment. The electric carts will be designed to run all day with one charge. Therefore, 5 kWh lithium ion secondary batteries may be used for the carts. Korea Yakult is expected to invest at least KRW 50 billion in development and production, KRW 10 to 15 billion in battery installation. The Ministry of Environment is paying attention to the company’s efforts. “This is a good example of private sector efforts to establish an environmentally friendly infrastructure without government’s help”, "we are totally prepared to help the company with the installation of recharge facilities or progressive electricity fee”, said a senior official of the Ministry of Environment.
