Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a leading mobile phone and telecommunication equipment provider, hosts the 5th annual Samsung 4G Forum 2007 at the Shilla Hotel in Seoul from August 27 to 28. Over 130 high-profile industry leaders, academia, standardization bodies, and service providers from 26 countries will discuss 4G visions and strategies under the theme of Explore Technology & Standard for 4G Realization.

This year's Samsung 4G Forum will be the first time that all three leading candidates of 4G technology . IEEE 802.16m (Mobile WiMAX), 3GPP2 Ultra Mobile Broadband (UMB), and 3GPP Long Term Evolution (LTE) - will be competed and debated against each other in one single location. Each technology will be promoted by Sprint- Nextel, Qualcomm, and T-Mobile, who are known as strong supporters of 4G technology. In the past, individual forums and conferences have been held independently through various organizations to discuss 4G technology. This forum, however, will offer every participant an ample opportunity to openly discuss various 4G technologies helping to reach the common goal of finding the most suitable and efficient way to bring forth the envisioned 4G world.

Two sessions of panel discussions will take place under the subjects of: Impact of WRC-07 on IMT-Advanced Services and Standards, and Visioning IMT-Advanced Services and Technologies. Samsung's dedication and devotion in development of future wireless technologies will be demonstrated during this forum as Samsung 4G Forum marks its fifth anniversary where Samsung 4G Forum has been widely embraced as a successful vehicle to heighten the visibility of 4G technology and its market realization.

In addition to 4G candidate technology evaluation, this forum will provide a crucial opportunity to discuss about the potential spectrum issues of 4G services since its spectrum allocation will be decided at the World Radio communication Conference (WRC) in October 2007. In that respect, Samsung 4G Forum 2007 will serve an important venue to interested participants assessing 4G spectrum allocation as it will be the last time where global experts will gather to map 4G spectrum visions.

Speakers will forecast spectrum policies not only from a global perspective but also from a regional perspective. Key presentations will include best mapping strategies between spectrum bands and services, and preferred spectrum bands by each region.

Geesung Choi, President of Samsung's Telecommunications Network business, said: "Taking technology leadership and investing resources in R&D are essential elements to achieve a continuous success in the telecommunications business. We will continue to invest in future technologies and contribute to the standardization efforts for 4G technology to lead the market." "I am also pleased and proud to host the 5th annual 4G forum and to see how it has been growing in terms of its scale and contribution for the realization of 4G technology and its readiness to the market. Samsung 4G Forum creates a valuable opportunity for gaining new foresights and building business networks with distinguished people under various topics related to 4G Service. And Samsung 4G Forum is expected to make substantial progress in investigating 4G visions and enabling strategies," he added.

The Samsung 4G Forum 2007 consists of an intensive two-day conference with relationship and network building sessions and programs. Latest innovative 4G technology demonstrations and exhibitions will also take place. It will offer participants a unique experience to acquire new information, to exchange innovative ideas and to interact with distinguished global experts.

Similar to the previous forum in 2006, the world's first 4G mobile technology will be demonstrated for this year's forum. Mobile WiMAX Wave 2 using a commercial PCMCIA card will be demonstrated for the first time since the technology was first demonstrated by Samsung at 3GSM World Congress earlier this year. Data speed comparisons of existing commercial Mobile WiMAX technology and 4G technology will be showcased through video game applications.

Latest Mobile WiMAX terminals and PCMCIA cards will be also exhibited. 4G technology, so called IMTAdvanced, is the most advanced future mobile telecommunication system offering up to 1 Gbps data speed for a stationary environment and 100 Mbps data speed for a mobile environment.

Fast WiBro, slow 3G

High-profile industry leaders - who spoke as keynote speakers - and CEOs at major companies at the Samsung 4G Forum 2007 have emphasized the technological advantages, announcing the schedules for the commercialization of 4G technologies.

Barry West, Sprint's chief technology officer, introduced Xhom, the new WiMax service, citing that mobile WiMax is not about new network but about providing mobility to the Internet, opening an era where customers bring various devices with them. "Extending its coverage to about 185 million subscribers by year-end 2008 would require a total of $5 billion. We will provide competitive services such as mobile searching by working with Google," he added.

Sanjay Jha, Qualcomm's chief operating officer, said that 3GPP2 ultra mobile broadband (UMB) is a new technology to protect 470 million IMT 2000 (WCDMA) subscribers and that UMB is workable in harmonizing existing technologies, investment and services. Next year, solutions can be delivered based on the chipset and the service will be commercialized by 2009.

Joachim Horn, CTO of T Mobile International, said that next-generation mobile network can serve as a solution to minimize investment but to maintain the quality of service. Kim expected that along with the standardization of 3GPP LTE, trial handsets will be released next year and the technology will be commercialized by 2010.

Besides, Takanori Utano of NTT DoCoMo, Dr. Roger B. Marks of IEEE 802.16 and Professor Tarok of Harvard University attended the forum and shared their thoughts about 4G. A spokesperson from Samsung said, "The market will determine if 4G becomes standards. Early commercialization through ensuring compatibility with 3G and securing global frequency will be the key to success."

WiBro expansion

Samsung will also start its first commercial service of WiBro, a next-generation mobile communication service, in 6 major cities in the USA including New York, Washington, and Baltimore, starting April of next year. As WiBro, which was first commercialized in Korea, makes its debut in the USA, Korea can use that in the process of standardizing the next-generation mobile technology.

Samsung said in the Forum that WiBro will bring the above mentionedopportunity for Samsung. Geesung Choi said that Samsung will expand its service to more foreign countries like Japan and England. Furthermore, Samsung will increase its investment in equipment related to WiBro, thus expecting the total revenue of the related network service to reach US$100 million.

Now 9 service providers from 7 countries are pursuing the commercial service of WiBro in Europe, South America and Asia.

President Choi added that "WiBro will be new business for Samsung and will play a role of producing new chance to succeeding in the miracle of Korean information and communication." He also emphasized that the business in USA will take root in the soil and become the world standard in mobile technology.

Samsung will put more money into research and development to occupy the standardization race. To this end, it plans to launch a new R&D center in Poland.
