Seoul, Korea - Telecom companies are scurrying to make preparations for the anticipated explosion of network traffic in the second half this year. As the telcos started to provide LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) service with doubled internet speed, the demand for video contents which takes up large amount of data traffic is expected to grow significantly. At the moment, the multimedia traffic is known to take up 30% of the whole mobile device data traffic, and with the commencement of LTE-A service, the rate is expected to reach beyond the 50% mark.
According to the industry on the 10th, SK Telecom recently started a procurement process for large-capacity router that costs tens of billion Won. The router SK Telecom is to purchase is a new device that performs both transmission and routing in one box, and expected to broden the company's data highway. The new router is to be installed in the second half this year, starting from the major metropolitan cities.
SK Telecom had started the LTE-A service using the Carrier Aggregation technology from late June, and expects the share of multimedia data traffic currently at around 30% will nearly double in a near future.
KT plans to increase the number of Femto-Cells the company installed nationwide from 10,000 to 20,000 in the second half to disperse the traffic that are not covered by the base stations. The company also plans to add hundreds of Giga-Wifi that supports 801.11ac standard.
LG U+ also expects that the volume of data traffic is to significantly increase as it will commence the LTE-A service next week and is preparing plans to expand the infrastructure.
A telecom company insider commented that not only the infrastructure will be added, but also the traffic control solutions will be adopted subsequently.

10일 업계에 따르면 SK텔레콤은 최근 수백억원대 대형 라우터 도입에 나섰다. 전송과 라우팅 기능이 합쳐진 신장비로 데이터 고속도로를 확대할 계획이다. 하반기 중 주요 광역시를 중심으로 구축에 들어간다.
시스코, 알카텔-루슨트, 화웨이 등 대형 통신장비업체 제품을 대상으로 테스트를 마쳤다. 업계 관계자는 “모바일 IPTV 등 비디오 트래픽에 대응하기 위해 신형 라우터 장비를 도입하는 것”이라며 “향후 3년 이상 꾸준하게 증설작업이 이뤄질 예정”이라고 말했다.
SK텔레콤은 6월 말 주파수집성기술(CA)로 LTE-A 서비스를 시작했다. 이에 따라 현재 30% 안팎의 멀티미디어 데이터 트래픽이 갑절 가까이 급증할 것으로 예상된다.
KT는 하반기 전국에 설치된 펨토셀을 1만개에서 2만개까지 갑절로 늘린다. 기지국으로 커버되지 않는 곳의 트래픽을 분산하기 위해서다. 801.11ac 규격을 지원하는 기가 와이파이도 수백 곳에 추가 증설할 계획이다.
KT는 이달부터 10월까지 한시적으로 데이터 제공량을 두 배로 늘리는 이벤트도 진행한다. KT 관계자는 “월평균 약 16%의 데이터 증가가 예상된다”며 “준비 중인 LTE-A 서비스가 시작되면 오프로딩(데이터 분산) 관련 증설작업이 더 활발하게 일어날 것”이라고 예상했다.
LG유플러스도 다음 주 LTE-A 서비스에 맞춰 트래픽이 증가할 것으로 보고 인프라 확충을 검토 중이다. 이 회사는 미 메이저리거 류현진 선수 1승 시 1GB를 추가 제공하는 등 가입자에게 데이터 혜택을 확대하는 이벤트도 병행한다.
통신사 관계자는 “LTE-A 서비스와 데이터 혜택 프로모션이 계속되며 소비자 트래픽 이용량이 예상치 이상으로 증가할 가능성이 있다”면서 “인프라 추가 증설은 물론이고 트래픽 관리 솔루션 도입도 잇따를 것”이라고 내다봤다.
