During the third quarter, Samsung Electronics released Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Note 3, while Apple showed off iPhone5S and 5C. Targeting the tablet computer market, Samsung Electronics released a 2014 version of Galaxy Note 10.1, while Apple launched iPad Air that is thin like iPhone.
According to the IT industry on November 5, Samsung Electronics reported sales of 59 trillion won for the third quarter of this year, ranking No. 1 in terms of sales, a quantitative indicator for smartphone sales. In terms of operating profit, a qualitative indicator for smartphone sales, however, Apple came on top with 10.76 trillion won.
According to a market research firm Strategy Analytics, Samsung Electronics sold 88.4 million smartphones throughout the world in the third quarter, up from 69.4 million units in the first quarter and 76 million units in the second, with its smartphone market share reaching an all-time high at 35.2 percent.
