SEOUL, KOREA - SK Telecom (NYSE:SKM) announced today that it won the “Best Wi-Fi Service Innovation Award” at this year’s Wi-Fi Industry Awards held in Beijing, China.
Wi-Fi Industry Awards is organized by the Wireless Broadband Alliance, an industry association formed to promote interoperability between operators in the Wi-Fi industry, and is the sole award in the world that recognizes top providers of Wi-Fi service.
SK Telecom has been named the winner of the “Best Wi-Fi Service Innovation Award” for its world’s first commercialization of ‘Giga Wi-Fi,’ which is a service that supports up to 1.3Gbps of speeds by applying 802.11ac, a standard technology chosen by IEEE. Starting with Samsung Galaxy S4, Giga Wi-Fi is being embedded in newly released smartphones and tablet PCs including LG G2 and Pantech Vega Iron. SK Telecom is currently focusing on expanding the service in densely populated areas like Seoul Station.
The company has been also recognized for ‘Best AP Selection,’ a technology that dramatically improves Wi-Fi quality; ‘Wi-Fi SON (Self Organizing Network),’ which automatically controls AP settings in order to maintain optimal service quality; ‘Wi-Fi Handover Technology’ that ensures seamless Wi-Fi connection when a user moves away from one Wi-Fi AP to another.
Especially, SK Telecom has commercialized Best AP Selection for the first time in the world in September 2013, based on the Next Generation Hotspot (NGH) technology. With Best AP Selection, the user’s mobile device automatically searches for and connects to the Wi-Fi AP that offers the fastest speed by analyzing Wi-Fi APs located near the device (e.g. signal strength, traffic, interference caused by nearby channels, and current number of users).
“SK Telecom is honored to receive this prestigious award from the Wireless Broadband Alliance as it recognizes our efforts to provide a differentiated quality and speed for our Wi-Fi service,” said Choi Jin-sung, Executive Vice President and Head of ICT R&D Division at SK Telecom. “We will further improve the speed and stability of our Wi-Fi service to deliver greater value for our customers.”
