SK Telecom announced that the company would begin HSDPA nationwide service starting March 29 this year, after completing 99% planned HSDPA nationwide network construction compared with the entire population.
But since SKT is scheduled to launch the telecom provider's exclusive terminals at the beginning of May if not later, fullscale and substantial competition with KTF is forecast for May. KTF launched its HSDPA nationwide service showing three exclusive phones earlier in the same month.
The company plans to launch three exclusive HSDPA terminals during May and six DBDM terminals through which users can use existing mobile phones and HSDPA at the same time, according to SKT officials.
Notably, SKT reduces multimedia message service charges by a maximum of 75% in step with nationwide HSDPA service.
SKT offers USIM-based finance services also for the first time in Korea.
It is said that SKT is scheduled to launch USIM M-Stock service at the beginning of April by teaming up with SK Securities. Accordingly, customers will be able to do convenient securities by utilizing account numbers or customer information which is stored in USIM without any need to visit a securities firm.
Following USIM securities services, SKT plans to provide customers with diverse services such as credit cards, banking, and membership services.
Together, the telecom provider launches T-LOGIN modems (CHU-628S) for exclusive HSDPA networks on April first.
With this HSDPA nationwide network construction as an impetus, SKT officials said that the company plans to concentrate on synergy maximization by commanding appropriate portfolio strategy between network along with existing 1X and EVDO network.
They added: "SKT would consolidate firmly service and quality leadership in cellular phone-based HSDPA service as well, which was commercialized for the first time in the world last May."
