Samsung Engineering and Construction is credited for creating the Raemian Apartments in the year 2000, the leading residence brand in Korea is still leading the trends in the residence industry today. From Cyber Apartment in 2000 to Ubiquitous Apartment 2007, Samsung Raemian's innovative construction has maintained the top rank on the National Customer Satisfaction Index (NCSI) for ten years in a row.

Samsung Makes Different

"Our idea is to invest less money while focusing on our customers' need and the desire to be on top. Whenever new technology is introduced, it becomes our top priority to verify the technology and apply it to our brand before any other companies do," Vice President Lee Baeg-geum of Samsung Engineering and Construction said.

In the year 2000, cyber apartments were constructed with high speed access network services for the first time in Korea. Then the intelligent apartments in the following year provided peaceful living conditions for residents to live in with less noise. This intelligent apartment design was upgraded to a high speed intelligent apartment design in 2003. In 2004, new items were suggested under the slogan:

"Residence efficiency to improve the quality of residential environment and carve out the path of the current health trend." In 2005, Raemian U-Plan, the convergence of housing and u-technology, was made to set a foundation for the future of residence culture. Last year, the previous two concepts were developed further to create a new concept, Housing Convergence, where a human being, house, future, and technology are all integrated. Along these lines comes the 2007 Raemian Style in the concept of Housing Sphere. "Housing Sphere refers to various environments that surround the house where the ecosystem, energy, design, and future technology interact with residents to live together symbiotically," Vice President Lee commented.

Housing Sphere and 4Es

The 4Es of the Housing Sphere Concept refers to ecosystems, energy, emotion, and emergence. Under the theme of nature and energy, 2007 Raemian will be applied with a soil energy system, solar lighting system, water system, garbage transport equipment, and ventilation system. The soil system keeps the temperature below the soil at 15 Celsius degrees throughout the year. This system is supposed to provide a fixed temperature for a building so that it would not require air conditioning or the heating. The soil energy system is already applied on construction sites in Daegu Raemian apartments and is planned to be applied in the Dongcheon project. The water system stores rain water to use for gardening and cleaning. Also, the wastewater reusage system purifies wastewater from showers, kitchens, and laundry in order to make the water reusable. The garbage transport system is controlled by a central collecting center to transfer garbage through a flowing air pipe at 60 to 70 kph. Lastly, wall socket power will be automatically turned off when the electronics are not in use. These systems will help residents to preserve the ecosystem and conserve energy in a convenient way.

Emotion refers to a design that centers on the residents' emotional wellbeing. Not only do the interior designs touch every detail of residents' needs, but also technology is used in the form of the R phone for the convenience of the residents. The R Phone stands for the Raemian phone. The R phone allows people to control the lights in the house, serves as an intercom, works as a TV, DVD, and air conditioning remote, and serves as a wireless phone using wireless internet. The lights can be set to four settings: general, reading, watching movies, and reception. The brightness of light can be controlled from 2,000K to 8,000K. Ventilation fans are installed in a veranda to reduce the noise from the fans while ventilation grill filters the contaminating substances.

Emergence, the last, refers to the future residence technology Samsung applies to construction. Samsung and Microsoft are together developing a Housing Framework to improve the home network system. Health Checker devices, for instance, check your health and automatically send the results to the local doctor's office. According to the examination result, suitable yoga therapy is recommended by showing a video clip on the monitor. The information monitor in the kitchen shows various pieces of cooking information and the location of a child in the house. The height of the sink can be automatically adjusted to the user's height via RFID applied technology. The intelligent refrigerator also uses RFID tags to notify the occupants about expiry dates of food products and chooses the ingredients for users when they select the meal they are going to cook on the monitor.

The E table monitor shows photo albums, music players, table games, and X-Box. When the user gets closer to the table, the monitor shows the family schedule and messages. When a music CD is put on the monitor, it automatically plays the CD, and when a book is put on the monitor, the information in the book is shown and read for the residents. Vice President Lee Baeggeum said that Samsung's ultimate goal is to design a space that provides an emotionally healthy life in harmony with nature and new technology.
