SHENZHEN, CHINA - Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announced the opening of its OpenDaylight (ODL) Lab in Shenzhen, China. OpenDaylight is an open and collaborative network programmability platform for software defined networking (SDN).

It also creates a solid foundation for network virtualization function (NFV) for networks of any size or scale. The Huawei run ODL Lab will become the first of its kind in Asia Pacific, and second in the world to be hosted by a third-party as part of the approved OpenDaylight Community Labs list. The Lab encourages open innovation and transparency for SDN and will enable developers and users in the region to test and experience ODL projects.

"It is important to the Project that OpenDaylight is accessible globally," said Mr. Neela Jacques, the Executive Director of OpenDaylight Project. "With this new lab from Huawei, developers in the East can become familiar with the SDN and NFV platform and help evaluate and debug the code base."

Through its dedication to the research and development of SDN technologies, Huawei has been actively promoting the application of SDN and NFV technologies in multiple areas including mobile backhaul networks, data centers, backbone networks, and metropolitan smart infrastructure. Huawei has also solidified its commitment to creating an open and transparent SDN ecosystem through its early membership of the ODL Open Source Community. In this capacity, Huawei plays an active role in contribution to fostering new innovation and reducing risk for the SDN Community, and has become a trusted partner of OpenDaylight to open a SDN open source lab.

Located within Huawei's headquarters in Shenzhen, China, the pioneering ODL Lab was opened after the OpenDaylight Project released its first version of open source software, "Hydrogen." The Lab will provide free services to the SDN Open Source Community, facilitating developers in APAC to test and verify the features of "Hydrogen," and explore new versions of ODL software still to come. The first ODL Lab owned by a third party vendor was opened by Ericsson in San Francisco in February this year.
