WASHINGTON, US - The IACA Award for “Best New Currency Feature”, presented at the Banknote Conference 2014, went to Giesecke & Devrient’s substrate and foil maker Louisenthal for its RollingStar® security thread in the 100 Dirham note which was issued in Morocco in September 2013 and is the first RollingStar® note in circulation. The International Association of Currency Affairs (IACA) is the industry’s biggest trade association and has been presenting its industry awards since 2007.

“We are proud and feel very honored”, said Dr. Wolfram Seidemann, Head of the Banknote Paper Division and Chairman of the Louisenthal Board of Managing Directors, “to have won this year’s ‘Excellence in Currency Awards’ in the category ‘Best New Currency Feature’. This is an acknowledgement of Louisenthal’s leading edge technology and role as innovation driver in security features. The Moroccan 100 Dirham note is a beautiful example for aesthetic feature integration: RollingStar communicates with the ‘rolling bar’ printed in silkscreen with SicpaSpark, building a cross-reference to achieve the highest security standard and easiest feature recognition for the public.”

Louisenthal’s RollingStar® is based on tiny microscopic mirrors plus ColourShift, a technology which provides outstanding protection against counterfeiting. “We created an excellent feature that is very obvious and very secure”, stated Seidemann. “When the banknote is tilted, a dynamic color shift reflection travels over the surface and creates a striking effect that is immediately caught by an untrained eye, even in poor light. Thus RollingStar guarantees immediate level-one authentication of banknotes which is an ideal first barrier against counterfeits.”

RollingStar® security threads can be combined with a variety of functional properties such as cleartext and machine-readable magnetism (MultiCode™). RollingStar® security threads are integrated into the banknote paper during its production. They remain firmly embedded in the substrate and are to ensure the banknotes’ integrity in the cash cycle.
