S-LCD Corporation, a joint venture company of Samsung Electronics and Sony Corporation, has started the operation of its second eighth-generation production line.
The S-LCD grand opening ceremony was held on June 2 at the Tangjeong Headquarters in South Chungcheong Province with approximately 300 guests including Howard Stringer, the chairman of Sony; Lee Yun-woo, the vice president of Samsung; Lee Jae-yong, the senior managing director; and Chang Won-kie, the president of S-LCD.
Both Sony and Samsung Electronics decided to invest US$1.4 billion in S-LCD in April 2008. Samsung owns 50 percent plus 1 of the total capital and Sony owns that of 50 percent minus 1. As a result of S-LCD’s accumulated unique technology and its optimized equipment, S-LCD plans to increase its flat panel TV production capability from 60,000 panels to 70,000 panels per month till the end of 2009.
“We will do our best to overcome the current crisis with Samsung and Sony and strengthen its expansion in the market for LCD TV,” S-LCD President Chang said. “We are going to provide LCD panels to both Samsung Electronics and Sony more efficiently and stably with this eighth-generation production line.”
