Samsung Electronics Compares Poorly with China’s Brand Power

Samsung Electronics ranked 29th, up one notch from last year, in the annual BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands ranking, complied by global market research agency Millward Brown Optimor, The Financial Times said on May 21. Samsung Electronics was the only Korean company to make the top 100 list.

However, The brand value of Chinese Internet giants, led by Tencent and Baidu, has turned out to be better than that of Samsung Electronics.

The brand value of Samsung Electronics amounted to USD 25.9 billion, up 21% from last year. Meanwhile, that of Tencent surged a whopping 46% y-o-y to USD 29.8 billion.

Chinese portal Tencent jumped seven notches to 14th place while Baidu climbed eight notches to finish 25th , overtaking Samsung Electronics.

A total of 11 Chinese companies, including Tencent, Chinese state-owned telecommunication company China Mobile (15th) and the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC) (17th), made the annual BrandZ Top 100 Most Valuable Global Brands list.

With Google and Apple taking the top two spots, the top 10 spots of the list were taken exclusively by American brands, including Apple, IBM, Microsoft, MacDonald, Coca Cola, Visa, AT&T, Marlboro, Amazon, etc.

The top 10 brands in the US, continental Europe and the UK grew strongly in value over the past 12 months, while brands from many emerging markets suffered, according to The Financial Times. Facebook, the second fastest riser after Tencent, saw its brand value surge 68% to 21th place. The growing power of social media was demonstrated by the appearance for the first time in the top 100 of Twitter (71st) and LinkedIn (78th), the FT said.
