“Hyundai and Kia Should Upgrade Fuel Efficiency by 25% by 2020” Chung Says

SEOUL, KOREA - Chung Mong-Koo, chairman of Hyundai Motor Group, demanded executives and employees to upgrade the fuel efficiency of Hyundai cars by 25 percent by 2020.Hyundai Motor Group, accordingly, plans to upgrade the average fuel efficiency of its vehicles by up to 25 percent in six years from now.

The group plans to achieve this ambitious goal through the development of a new powertrain, the lightening of the vehicle’s weight, and the introduction of eco-friendly vehicles.

Hyundai Motor Group confirmed its 2020 fuel efficiency improvement road map on November 6.Under this road map, it plans to mobilize every possible group-wide resource and personnel.

This move is part of the group’s effort to cope with the increasing fuel efficiency regulation in developed economies, including the United States and Europe.

A group official said, “The improvement of powertrains will contribute to improving the fuel efficiency by 11-13 percent for gasoline engine, 16-18 percent for diesel engine, and 2-9 percent for transmission.”
