On July 20, Samsung Electronics, a global leader in semiconductors, telecommunications and digital convergence, announced the Eco-Management 2013 Initiative.

According to the plan, the electronics giant plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from manufacturing facilities by half within five years and those from products by 84 million tons. It will also invest W5.4 trillion (US$4.35 billion) in eco-management initiatives and enhance green partnerships with suppliers and partners within the period.

To achieve the goal, Samsung said its LCD and semiconductor lines will introduce PFC and SF6 reduction technologies and enhance energy management systems. It will also enhance the energy efficiency of its products including TVs, refrigerators and air conditioning systems to the highest level in the industry, and reduce standby power consumption from 1.0W to 0.5W. The company also pledged to strengthen environmental cooperation with suppliers and partners, including supporting the implementation of green management systems such as ISO 14001, and the establishment of greenhouse gas inventories.

Samsung Electronics' Vice Chairman and CEO Yoon-Woo Lee said, “As a leading global technology company, Samsung Electronics has always taken our environmental responsibilities very seriously, but today we are committing to becoming a truly green enterprise that places eco-management at the very heart of our business decision-making and growth."

On Aug. 7, about two weeks after the announcement, Samsung introduced the eco-friendly phone Reclaim in the US market, making it easier for people to go green with new eco-friendly products, services and programs.

Made from 80 percent recyclable materials, Reclaim is the perfect phone for eco-conscious consumers. Reclaim's bio-plastic makes up 40 percent of the outer casing. It is also free of PVC, phthalates, and almost free of brominated flame retardants. The image and text on the outer box packaging are printed with soy-based ink. The product will be available in the US market Aug. 16, according to Samsung Electronics.

Samsung Electronics' eco-green efforts have a long history. In 1992, the company declared an historic environmental policy advocating the preservation of the environment for the betterment of mankind.

The policy was extended to the announcement on green management in 1996. Green management is split into five categories -- the greening of management, products, processes, workplace and communities.

Samsung Electronics has well-established eco-partner certification systems as well. The company started the system in 2004 to reduce hazardous substances in parts and raw materials and to promote its environmental quality system to partner companies.

The eco-partner certification system encourages partner companies to comply with international environmental standards for components and raw materials and to recognize excellent partner companies with certificates, after assessing their management of hazardous substances.

Samsung also operates the Environmental Hazardous Substances Management System (e-HMS) to efficiently operate its eco-partner certification system and to prevent non-certified parts or raw materials from being used in manufacturing. Towards this aim, Samsung Electronics prohibits hazardous substances from being contained in products that it uses, and abides by international environmental standards.
