Comparison of survival rate: That of The Korean medical team led by Prof. Kim is the highest as much as 73 % while the Japanese and U.S teams show the survival rates of 68 % and 57 %, respectively.
The 15-year survival rate of single ventricle patients who had the surgery in Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH, www.snuh.org/english/ )is 73 %, is reportedly confirmed much higher than those of the U.S. (53%), the Japanese (68%), and the French medical teams (69%). This disease is one of the most severe congenital heart defects.
At the 51st Annual Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons which was held on San Diego in US, from Jan. 24 to Jan. 28, the medical team led by Prof. Kim Woong-han, the thoracic surgery department at SNUH announced the results of the medical research.
The SNUH medical team monitored 110 single ventricle patients with ectopic syndrome who had surgeries from 1992 to 2014.
The SNUH medical team analyzed the factors which cause mortality risks. It found that the existing mortality risk factors like atrioventricular valve regurgitation can be highly likely to be cured as long as it is treated in its early stages.
The 10-year survival rate of the 36 patients who had surgery for atrioventricular valve regurgitation among the total is 80%. This is also a lot higher than 64 % which is introduced in foreign medical journals.
The SNUH’s research on CHD is conducted for longest on many patients, compared to the existing researches. The Meeting of The Society of Thoracic Surgeons is the most authoritative on thoracic surgery in the world. The SNUH’s medical team headed by Prof. Kim made an opportunity for Korea and SNUH to show the medical excellence around the world through this research.
