Ssangyong Motor is witnessing a sharp increase in its sales of sports utility vehicles thanks to the surging demand for SUVs along with the expansion of outdoor markets in Korea. According to Ssangyong Motor on April 27, the company sold 21,107 cars in the first quarter of this year in the domestic market, up 25.7 percent from a year earlier.
During the same period, its SUV sales rose by more than 40 percent to 19,608 units. In other words, Ssangyong Motor achieved the second highest growth in the SUV segment among the nation’s five major car makers, standing right behind Renault Samsung which marked a 37.5-percent growth in SUV sales during the period.
The main driver behind the robust growth of Ssangyong Motor is its newly released SUV Tivoli. Over the past three months, Tivoli has shipped more than 8,000 units, with its supply falling short of demand. Ssangyong Motor expects the sales of Tivoli to exceed its annual target set at 25,000 units.
