Federal prosecutors have reached agreements with multiple software companies – deals that force them to stop offering allegedly illegal Internet sweepstakes software in cafes in North Carolina.
The companies, White Sands Technology, Sierra Software, TNT Software, Digital Reveal and Figure 8 Technologies, agree that, as of July 1, they will no longer have any involvement with sweepstakes in the state involving an entertaining display. In return, federal authorities promise not to prosecute.
Together, the companies supplied software to more than 265 locations across the state.
Thomas Walker, United States attorney, said he hoped the action would be “a big step forward” in upholding the state’s gambling laws.
The North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement, the Internal Revenue Service and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the investigation.
In a separate agreement, HSV Entertainment agreed to stop offering sweepstakes in North Carolina with an entertainment display. HSV has had a lease with the city of Roanoke Rapids to operate at the Roanoke Rapids Theater. The company terminates its Roanoke operation effective May 18.
