Samsung Electronics in this year’s first quarter raised its commanding share of the global DRAM market, data from industry observer TrendForce showed Tuesday.

Samsung solidified its position as the leading global manufacturer of mobile DRAMs with a share of 52.1 percent based on first-quarter revenue of US$1.8 billion, up from 46.1 percent in last year’s fourth quarter. The big spike in market share was thanks to robust sales performance by 23-nanometer products.

TrendForce said Samsung is producing en masse 20nm and 23nm mobile DRAMs and leading the pack for LPDDR4 production, adding that the company’s power will keep growing.

Fellow Korean company SK Hynix came in second with 22.9 percent on US$820 million in revenue, but this was down from 28 percent in last year’s fourth quarter, and together with Samsung, SK Hynix controlled 75 percent of the global market.

TrendForce said SK Hynix’s dip in market share was due to seasonal factors stemming from lack of captive market like Samsung possesses.

Third on the list was Micron Technology of the U.S. with 22.6 percent, fourth place went to Nanya Technology of Taiwan with 1.4 percent and fifth to Winbond Electronics of Taiwan with 0.9 percent.
