Hanwha Group will build the nation's largest solar cell plant in Jincheon, North Chungcheong Province. In addition, the company will invest in the expansion of a solar module plant already under construction at the cost of 10 billion won. Hanwha Group said on May 31 that its solar power unit Hanwha Q-Cells Korea would set out to build a 1.5-gigawatt solar sell plant in the western part of the landlocked province.

In addition to the 250-megawatt solar module plant under way in Eumseong, again in North Chungcheong Province near Jincheon, which is to be completed by the end of June this year, the group will also add another 250-megawatt solar module capacity in the premises by the end of September.

Hanwha Q-Cells is originally a German company acquired by Hanwha SolarOne. Hanwha Q-Cells Korea is a separate company established jointly by Hanwha Corp. and Hanwha Chemical for domestic solar business.

The latest decision to build a new plant and expand an existing one is intended to support the 1-trillion-won module supply contract signed with NextEra Energy of the United States in April this year. A Hanwha Group official said, "Once the 1.5-gigawatt solar cell plant and the 500-megawatt plant are up and running, we will be able to hire a total of 950 employees." Kim Seung-mo, Hanwha Q-Cells Korea president, said, "By having a solar cell production plant in Korea, we could diversify our business."
