The shipment of 4K LCD TV panels exceeded the 3-million mark in April, representing the highest monthly record in history.
According to market research firm DisplaySearch on June 16, 4K panels accounted for 14 percent in total TV panel shipments in April 2015.
TV panels are classified into HD (1,366 x 768), FHD (1,920 x 1,080), 4K (3,840 x 2,160), 8K (7,680 x 4,320) and so on, depending on the number of pixels. 4K refers to UHD.
IHS Technology noted that TV brands are increasingly employing 4K panels as their prices continuously declined last year and in early this year.
Taiwanese panel makers played a leading role in 4K panel production in early days but today Korean panel makers are spearheading the 4K market. LG Display and Samsung Display have become the world’s largest 4K display suppliers.
The global shipments of 4K LCD TVs reached 4.7 million units in the first quarter of this year, up 400 percent from a year ago. Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics had a combined share of 47 percent in the global 4K TV market.
