Nowadays, while I am reading the newspaper, I can read many articles about iot. Iot, the internet of things, is the interconnection of things through the internet.
In other words, it is the communication network among various objects through the internet. A typical example of iot is the “Smart bag” which connects to a phone and makes notifications with an LED on the bag to users when there are notifications from the phone. Google glass is also an example of iot.
Some people say that iot can have many negative effects. First, it is an invasion of a person's privacy since it connects more and more individuals to each other. Second, when there is an error, the whole system could collapse. Before the time it takes to recover, people cannot live normal lives. Third, there will be people who intentionally put viruses into the system to collect our information.
There was a representative case in the USA. A blogger brought up a problem about the security of CCTV and baby monitors from one company. The company officially said that their baby monitors had no security problems. However, it was discovered that that anyone who wanted to could easily access the system.
In fact, somebody got into the system and over 700 real time videos of families and sleeping babies were spread to people. This situation illustrates the main worries about iot. It was an invasion of privacy due to an error in a company's system, and there was intention to drain information from the system.
Still, despite these concerns, I think iot’s positive effects will outweigh the negative effects. With iot, we could live more convenient and healthy lives, and save on time and energy. Nowadays in Korea, MERS is a hot topic. The World Health Organization (WHO) has said that the MERS virus can spread by touching other people.
In fact, many people who became infected with the MERS virus in Korea became infected by someone they didn't know. So, many people have avoided going outside. We could make use of iot at this time. For example, by wearing iot health bands, we can check our heart rate, blood pressure, body temperature, and other data on our health. Then, I think researchers can develop a device that can check the symptoms of MERS to conclude whether the person should go the hospital or not. When someone is worried about MERS, they can easily check whether their suspicions are correct. It can reduce the speed of the spread of MERS.
Of course, it's hard to do this for everyone. So, the government could place this device in every public place. The problem with this is that in times like these people are scared to go to public places to check. So, we should use iot connected with smart phones. Smartphones today have healthcare features like checking heart rates, but they are insufficient to check for MERS. By embedding chips in front of smartphones, the phone can make a comprehensive check of the body’s condition.
When something about the phone user is abnormal, the smartphone system will take additional data from the user’s touch. It will be safer and much more efficient. In brief, iot will be most useful in infectious diseases related situations. Many people say that nothing is important than our health. Using iot, we can check and maintain our health, the most important part of our lives.
