Samsung Electro-Mechanics announced on June 26 that it decided to discontinue the production and sales of hard disc drives as part of an effort to focus on its core business.
A company official said, “Despite a variety of efforts we have made to improve the efficiency of the HDD business operation, we have no option but to withdraw from the business.”
The official added that the market environment surrounding this hard disk drive business has continued to deteriorate, with the demand continuously declining. He said that he expects this decision to contribute to improving the company’s overall profitability.
He noted, “We will continue our effort to strengthen our competitiveness through the expansion of R&D spending, the exploration of new business, and the concentration on core business.”
